Captain America (2011)

Brand New Day by [archiveofourown.org profile] acidpop25
The author says: After Steve's plane goes down, Peggy undergoes an experimental attempt to recreate the Super Soldier serum and winds up a superhero herself. Seventy years later, they find Steve. Yes, and so much more. Peggy and Steve finally get that first date. And a very hot first time. I wish this could happen in the movie.

In which Steve is a woman and she and Bucky reunite in the future and have hot first time sex.

Keep Calm and Carry On by [archiveofourown.org profile] listedheart
She sees them share their cigarettes, their rations, the crumpled, handwritten news they get sent from home. A few of the older men rally themselves around a boy who looks younger than Peggy, who must surely have lied on his forms, pink-eyed and homesick. They play poker for chunks of chocolate and handfuls of copper coins. She keeps her distance, but seeing friendship and makeshift families coming together in such a foreign place helps her settle.

It's her first time away from home as well, after all. She knows it's just empathy, but with each warm surge of feeling she gets from observing her men, her mother's words ring hollow in her ears. Peggy doesn't know how anyone could face the war without love.
5 times Peggy falls in love. Really lovely.

"You know, they're calling me your sidekick now."

Steve who's settling in beside him, freezes. "My sidekick?"

"Yeah. Captain America and Bucky. His trusted kid-sidekick."

"We're the same age..."

"I know. It's those fucking comics."

"Oh."

Then Steve glances at him, sly. "Does this mean you're my Robin?"

"If you think I'm going to run around without any pants on, you've got another thing coming."

"I don't know. I think you could make it work."
Heartbreaking. Oh, Bucky. Oh, Steve...

"Steve's always blamed himself because he couldn't save you, James," she says softly. "That he couldn't find you, couldn't bring you home--"

--you were left behind no one came for you and you were left to die they didn't come to find your body so they could take you home didn't want you because no one cared--

"--before he died. When he--when S.H.I.E.L.D. thawed him out he never stopped talking about you. Even now you're back you're still first in his thoughts."

"He thought if he'd survived," Tony says as Pepper falls silent, "you might've too, but when we took a team out to look for you, for any sign, anything left--"

"I was long gone," Bucky murmurs.
Bucky learns some things and tries to figure out how to make them better for Steve. (I also really like that Pepper calls him 'James' in this. That seems appropriate.)

That Heart of Yours Could Crumble Kings by [archiveofourown.org profile] CallMeBombshell
But then, Steve's always been a better man than Bucky, always been the better of the two of them, and Bucky thinks that Steve can handle it, can handle the weight and the pressure and the responsibility of it all, because for as much as Steve carries the world, Bucky has always carried Steve. Lovely snippet of unrequited Bucky->Steve. Oh Bucky.

"Is that what you're trying to get Cap to do here?" Clint asks with a grin. "Get him to make some noise to Beyonce?"

"Darcy's been helping me get acquainted with popular culture," Steve says, with a glance back at the computer. "It's been...an interesting learning experience."

"I've already gotten him an iPod," Darcy says proudly. "We're putting together some playlists for his musical education."

"An iPod, huh?"

"Yeah, and SHIELD paid for it," Darcy says with a smug grin. "God, it's awesome being able to put stuff on an expense list."
Adorable story of Darcy and Clint going on a date, but the best part is Steve and Darcy as bros.

In the end, there are no magical gifts for Sokka and he doesn't go straight home, but a ship and a maiden are both involved. Kyoshi Island is on his way, after all.

Standing on the deck next to Suki, watching her bright eager smile and the way she grips the rail as the prow slices through the waves on their way into harbor, it dawns on Sokka that this may not match the tales, but he can find nothing in this twist to complain about.
Eeeeeeeeee! Written for me in the [community profile] white_lotus Lunar New Year exchange! Sirius loved him and he wanted to tell the world, but he couldn't open his mouth to his best friend. He wondered if Moony deserved better. Love didn't measure well in worth, no more than gold measured well in miles. There weren't equations and conversion rates. It just was and Remus knew that even if there was some sort of scale, he wouldn't care to check it. Sirius is afraid to tell James he and Remus are together. Book by [archiveofourown.org profile] jendavis
Abed redoubles his attention on the screen, trying to figure out what it is that's causing the tears- it's Shepherd Book, dying on Haven, every hint of his real identity being cut off too soon. It's a brilliant scene, highlighting all the questions surrounding Book's secret past while proving, without doubt, that those questions would never be answered. It's as frustrating as the series itself, thirteen perfect episodes and a movie, and a hundred story lines that never got to be. Awesome first kiss for Troy and Abed, from Abed's POV, with some lovely Firefly references.

Mary Poppins

Eternity in a Kiss by [personal profile] snacky
Bert's spent countless untold years with Mary, traveling with her from place to place, from family to family. Sometimes he arrives in the place before her, and waits. Sometimes he catches up to her, after she's been there for a while. He's immortal, of course, thanks to her, but he's not immortal like her. There are places Mary Poppins can live and thrive that Bert can't, and during the years when she's living with families under water, or deep in the heart of a flaming volcano, Bert can only wait for the winds to change, the tides to turn, the volcano to sleep, and hope the next child lives in a place where he can join them.

He's not magic like Mary Poppins, but over the years, Bert's developed his own magic, making paintings and drawings that can come to life, and can be used as portals to other worlds.
Lovely and clever backstory for Bert. ♥

Time Watches From the Shadow by [personal profile] shadesofbrixton
Steve has the common sense - or good grace - to look a little bashful now, like that'll do a gorram thing for Mal's opinion of him. "I'm looking for someone - I was told you were the man to come to. That this ship did things other people wouldn't."

"She maybe does," Mal monotones, tipping his head at Inara, who rolls her eyes.

Steve sighs, obviously fed up with his treatment of the "lady." Well, good. He deserves as much frustration as Mal's feeling. "A - a friend of mine is trapped in a facility." He's searching Mal's face, those baby blues suddenly real sharp. "I heard your crew had experience - "

Mal's gun is out and tipped up under Steve's chin before he can finish the sentence. "Heard from who."

To the stranger's credit, he doesn't stammer under the press of steel. "Shepherd Book," he says calmly.
Eeee! Steve and Bucky 500 years in the future! Bucky trapped by the same people who had River and Steve asks Mal's help to get him back! Mal being frustrated that everything is out of his control. I love this so much!

"Arrested on your wedding day," Mrs. Hudson shakes her head. "It's going to take some doing to charm themselves out of this one."

The rain hits the earth like fallen nails, a clang and batter against the pavement. Broyles flicks his collar against the chill, the brief flare of a match warming his fingertips. His dancing shoes are slick with wet, the puddles at his feet a reflected one-two jab of red and blue light. He breathes out and watches as Nina approaches, moving past his patrol car and entering the pedestrian tunnel. Sharp doesn't hustle, her steps short, powered, never rushed, as if the rain wouldn't dare dampen her over-priced suits and leather shoes. Perfect bit of Sharp/Broyles noir nihilism set in the Brown Betty-verse.

Suspicion narrows his eyes. "You want SHIELD to replace everything?"

Alone with him, you re-map the planes of his body, re-learn the different cadences of his voice, re-fit yourself to the dips and curves of his form, and it satisfies the humming in your blood, relaxes the tension in your chest, which, like an unwelcome guest you could not dismiss, had stayed for so long that you had forgotten it was ever not there, until it no longer was. Marcus shuts his eyes, tries to remember - when we have turned the wheel of time a thousand years - but the line is gone.

At his feet, Esca crouches, and his hand coaxes smoke from scattered ash and sodden straw. Soon they are piling the wood they have carried, square like a pyre; Marcus feels like a child, somehow, making camp in his own home.

Wichita wrote a list for him, because the whole concept was stupid and passive and that’s just not her. Anyway, Columbus likes lists. She writes a list of all the things she’s going to tell Columbus, and the only reason she won’t is because she might run out of time. The secrets she wants to keep from him, well, she’s taking those to the grave and hopefully not beyond. I really enjoyed this look at Columbus and Wichita's relationship after the movie.

We wanted to warn people, but we didn’t want to get taken back to Perryville—or worse, back to the lab. We figured Scott might even just send hit men after us or something. Who’d’ve listened to us? So we stayed together and kept a low profile, just in case anyone was looking. I even started praying of an evening, though I still don’t know as I think anybody’s listening. Any port in a storm, though, right? I guess when times are bad, at heart we’re all just on our knees in a gravel road, hoping that light in the sky ain’t just an oil fire. Reads like it could have been part of the book. Really well-characterized and the ending surprised me.

Dani didn't get how Crews had turned into the exception. Crews, who ignored her lines in the sand and her pointed silences, but tossed her the keys every time, bought her coffee with his fruit and listened when it was important, listened when she didn't say anything at all. Maybe that was zen – to give without expecting anything, and get everything in return. She'd given her trust almost without realizing it – believed so hard that she could stare at a photo and trust him blind, taunt Nevikov to his face and never doubt that Crews would come for her. But there was no debt there, even after he climbed into a deathtrap to get her out.

Like many things about Crews, it didn't make sense. She wasn't sure it ever would.

Jo considered her captor. "If I wrote this scene, the heroine would be forced to kiss the villian in order to escape."

Laurie shrugged. "If you wrote this scene, the heroine would kiss the villian only to discover he was, in the end, her hero."

"Not likely, if I were true to the tale playing out here."

Laurie feigned hurt. "You wouldn't know your hero if he was right in front of you, milady?"

She shook her head again, another pin flying loose. "I have no hero, for I am in need of none."

Laurie had to kiss her then. Her muffled surprise faded, and her hands went slack in his.

He broke the kiss first, and Jo's eyes remained closed. "Um...Teddy....we...."

Her face was soft, and he was surprised at himself, at her. It hadn't come of anything, he thought firmly, determined not to fall into romanticizing something Jo would likely rather forget. Teddy, we must not, was surely what came next.

Her parents wouldn't tell her where he went when he was gone, or when he'd be back, or where he lived, or what he did for a living. He wouldn't tell her any of those things either; he never told her how long he'd visit, he never promised he'd see her soon. This is a beautiful story I never realized I needed. Ged blinks. 'Some things,' he says slowly, 'are unchanging, I thought: the sea, the sun, the wind that moves the grass around us. And yet, the sea moved and Soléa was lost, the dry land is green once more, and the doors of Roke are open. And that, I am told, was your doing. Yes, Irian, I think things change, but we must husband that change along. Little use if we plant the seed and fail to tend to it.'

'And must I be the seed and the farmer too then?'

'Orm Irian, I am an old man on a farm that yields nothing but hard work and rebellious goats. It is not for me to tell you what you should do: a Dragon Lord is one whom dragons will speak with, not someone who can command dragons, eh? A pretty fix we'd be in if some fool tried to leash dragons.'

River water you could stand on and the general public’s realization that hey, this building is touching that building and that building and thatbuilding is my house made most potential arsonists follow their survival instincts and join the Alchemists’ Guild instead.2

And I feel I wanna stay by [livejournal.com profile] delicatale
Sweet story where Steve adopts a cat and Bucky has to learn to live with it (for Steve, I would learn to live with a cat, and I am terribly allergic, so I feel Bucky on this one). (Author says modern AU, but I figure it can be set after Bucky's back so not really AU at all)

clean with dirty hands by [archiveofourown.org profile] listedheart
He's never done this with just anyone. There have been girls, sure, plenty of girls back home, but Bucky's never felt safe and vulnerable all at once when he's been on his knees for a dame. He's been on his knees for Steve before, twice back when they were in Brooklyn, too far gone on cheap beer and untainted by war. Steve had still been smaller than him, but with Bucky's knees going numb on the cheap carpet of his apartment, the height difference had been turned on its head then, too.

Bucky doesn't think he'd do those things with anyone other than Steve.
Hot yet sweet PWP, the first time Steve and Bucky are together after Steve's become Captain America.

When Steve leans down--leans down, Bucky is still wrapping his mind around that one--when he kisses Bucky, tender and earnest, like this is something that he's wanted to do as long as Bucky has... That's when Bucky realizes that this was the best idea ever, because they were meant to do this. They were made to do this. This kissing, and Steve's arms around Bucky's waist and Bucky's arm wrapped around Steve's shoulders and neck, is as natural as breathing and right as rain, and something they should have done so long ago and as much as possible. I draw a million sparkly hearts around this. This is absolutely what happened after Steve rescued Bucky at the Hydra base. <3

Written for my prompt at the Three Sentence Ficathon. Nnnngggghhhh so good I wanted it to go on forever. Men kill each other in war, that's just how it goes; Steve knows this and he shoots when he has to, but it goes against some deep grain in his soul, and Bucky knows that no matter how Steve tries to play the confident hero, because Captain America or not, Steve is still Steve and Bucky has always looked out for him.

The first weekly football night with the Avengers had just one problem - beer. Or really? The fact that Thor thought Budweiser didn't qualify. Or Coors Light. Or, shockingly, PBR. I know, who knew, right? Apparently Thor was used to beer with actual grains in it and not high fructose corn syrup.

Names were called, beer cans were thrown. It was pretty messy. So that's why Darcy dragged Thor off to the Brooklyn Brewery as soon as the latest ice gun crisis was over.

Apparently beer made with actual beer was a hit.

Bucky had to look away. Not out of - he figured they assumed it was disgust, old Mr. Barnes couldn't handle the newfangled ways of love, but he'd never been able to look at couples being coupled, not for very long.

It was like seeing a girl before she put on her face, or Steve asleep in a puddle of drool: It wasn't right. It was an invasion of privacy.

Not that Bucky had ever had much of a problem with invading anyone's privacy.

The Difference Between Retrieval and Recovery by [livejournal.com profile] to_say_nothing
She closed her eyes. "I wish the future would hold steady for a while," she said plaintively. She felt young. She was sure - nearly sure - that she was older than she'd ever been, but she felt young and lost. "I wish I could get my balance." Nick organizes a rescue after Cassie is taken by Division. Good action, and a really lovely and true reunion for them.

Facet by [archiveofourown.org profile] unrequitedangst
This is a day: over breakfast, they loudly debate what to do that day, even as her pen moves steadily through the unformed memories of it corporeal on paper, even as he complains that her cars look like boxes, her people like blobs--what the hell is that even supposed to be?--even as she tells him to fuck off, her art is pretty fucking amazing, all right, it is a rough sketch. They go out into the street and talk to people and maybe get shot at, then they go somewhere else for lunch, bickering over her possibly shitty-or-not-shitty taste in clothing, and then they get shot at some more. When it's over, they still aren't dead yet. Really love series of snippets about their life on the run.

Future Imperfect by [livejournal.com profile] to_say_nothing
Cassie always drew what she saw, even when she didn't like it. She'd drawn herself and Nick dying, dying, dying, tortured and imprisoned, drugged and separated. She drew herself now, crying up at the ceiling. "You were dead, and I thought," he starts before kissing her again.

There's blood on his lips, her blood and Cassie doesn't know what to say, what to do so she reaches out for him, closes the unused space between them to press his body against hers. The solidness of his weight above her makes her feel safe and protected in a way she didn't realize she needed. "Nick," she breathes against him, mouth brushing against his to stop the frantic sounds he's making. "I'm ok," she says, eyes fluttering, limbs heavy and mouth slack. "I'm ok."

Cassie would feel doomed if it wasn't for her latest vision of her and Nick hustling a dice game, a fond familiar smile on his face.

She visits him when she can, but it never ends well. The technicolor swell flies outward from his fists, and she has to drug him again, rubbing her bruised face and calling for a Stitch.

She can't be older than Tim. It's not, as he well knows, any kind of testament to her skill-levels; when Bruce was younger than Tim is now, he was already one of the most dangerous fighters on Earth. Without even going into the likes of Cass or Damian.

Or she could be meta. In which case, of course, all bets are off. Bruce feels his lips set into a thin line. All considered, that is still preferable to magic.

But she doesn't attack him, simply looks at him, solemn and unafraid. Something deep in Bruce's chest shifts.

Set one year post movie, Charles overloads himself in Cerebro, and his mind goes walkabout; wherever he is (and he's around), it's not in his body. Catherine Weaver (as she goes by now) loves being right. It might seem like a petty thing, a mere show of superiority, but she has never met a machine consciousness more advanced than her own and so she has no need for any additional reason to feel "above."

Weaver loves being right because it means she has figured out a puzzle. Possessing correct data doesn't mean that one is right; being right only happens when one has been bold enough to risk drawing a conclusion – to interpret. Being right means that one has risked being wrong.

It is for similar reasons that she also loves to be surprised, though few things manage to do it. Both machines and humans can be so… predictable. At least for someone who understands their behavior like Weaver does.
Brilliant look at Weaver and how she ends up where she does on the show. Utterly fantastic.

"Look," says Tony, sitting down cross-legged on the floor next to Bucky, "even I can tell that if you want to ride that bronco, you have to buy a ticket, wait, no, that's a terrible analogy, er, Pep, I need a hand, here-"

"He's in love with you," says Pepper, "and you are the only person who has ever met the two of you, I should imagine, who is in ignorance of that. Go home, Sergeant Barnes."
This isn't really how I see Bucky, but this story pushes a lot of my buttons and it is both hot and sweet and has pining and unrequited love that is actually requited, so, yes. Also, Pepper remains the actualfax best.

Like Oxygen When I Breathe You In by [livejournal.com profile] sparklyfiend
The author says it's five times Steve had a panic attack, but mostly it's about how much Steve and Bucky love each other. *happy sigh*

"Hey, come on. You know I won't let you fall."

"Heh, yeah." Bucky leans into his hand, then away to set the bottle down by the side of Steve's bed. After, he sidles unsteadily closer to settle over Steve's lap, close and warm with the dozy, familiar smell of alcohol on his breath. "I know you won't."
Oh my heart. Bucky doesn't like heights. Steve promises to take care of him. And then what happens in the movie happens. Oh, Bucky. Oh, Steve... *sniffle*

paralyzed down both sides by [livejournal.com profile] stardustcities
Steve scrubs a hand back through his hair, leans into his desk. He's exhausted, because it's exhausting trying to investigate a case when he's sleeping with the man he's supposed to be hunting down. Bucky is there in an instant, so light on his feet that Steve doesn't know he's next to him until Bucky's touching his arm, up to his neck, finding pressure points and dipping his fingers into them, massaging until Steve is loose with his touch. "Bucky," Steve mumbles, feels like it's all he can say, a mantra that he can't bear to stop repeating. He's not supposed to know Bucky's name; he's not supposed to know anything about him.

Except he knows everything about him.
Non-powered AU where Steve joins the NYPD when Bucky ships out. And then Bucky comes back and he's... different. It's short but it made me say Oh, Bucky and Oh, Steve a lot. I wish it were longer.

To Have and to Hold by [livejournal.com profile] necchan
This is some really lovely Steve/Bucky from childhood through the movie.

Trembling on with steady aim by [archiveofourown.org profile] gloss
He trained as an assassin. He was, they said, a natural.

They gave him a knife, a pistol, and a mask as well as a dumb yellow-haired pretty boy partner.

They didn't need to say, Kill. Kill 'em all. Be sneaky, and mean, and inscrutable. Kill 'em.

That much was understood.
AU where Bucky is Nisei. Brilliant and clear-eyed and painful. Highly recommended.

you've been acting awful tough lately by [livejournal.com profile] postcardmystery
Steve leans in and kisses him, hard and long, and says, "I'm in if you are."

"We don't have to, you know, give this a name," says Bucky, still staring at the floor, and Steve says, "Why not? Let's not be stupid this time."

"Let's not go hopin' for too much," says Bucky, and Steve pulls Bucky into his side, and says, "Yeah, maybe not."
Pining, snark and porn, which is pretty much what I want from these two.

Bro-hood and Other Drugs by [archiveofourown.org profile] Lunik
Loki and Natasha become blood brothers. Natasha's not sure how she feels about this. Adorable. "Well, we're brothers now."

"Please go away," Natasha said.

"Can't." Loki was starting to laugh, the bastard. "We shared blood. I'm getting flashes of memory back - we didn't leave anything out. You and I, Natasha Romanov, are blood brothers."

Natasha sat on the couch next to him. "Go to hell," she said, with a little less heat than she would usually have managed. "I have too many boobs to be anyone's brother."

Loki laughed aloud at that. "And you think I'm the most masculine person in Asgard? No, there's no such thing as blood sisters. You know, I was just thinking I needed a new brother. The one I've got is so terrible."

Darcy introduces Steve to the joys of being friends with benefits. Sweet and funny, with a nice Darcy voice.

"Barton, we're leaving," says Natasha, and pulls him, unresisting out into the corridor, where she says, her eyes narrowed, "I don't need you to fight my battles for me. I didn't ask you to."

"You could be dead," he says, not meeting her eyes, and she pulls his chin back up, says, "If he kills me, I give you permission. Otherwise, stop trying to be the hero I do not want or require, Agent Barton."

"Oh, I think you require a few things," Clint says, a smirk spreading across his face, and Natasha cocks her head, says, "I assure you, Barton, in that department, I am more than adequately equipped."

"Fuck," says Clint, his eyes widening, and Natasha says, "No, Barton. Keep trying."
Really lovely Natasha/Clint set between IM2 and the Avengers movie.
