Something from Nothing (The Gratitude Sings in Me Chorale) by Laura
"This is what I have to be doing," River says. He's wary of her, and that's going to have to change now.

"Well, you can't just go on staring at me. Makes a man nervous after a time. That time, you understand, being now."

She smiles, and says, "I could help you. You can't cook, you know."

"There ain't nothing wrong with my cooking," he says. But he scratches the back of his neck and looks away. "And 'sides, it don't seem like the best idea to be letting you loose with all the boiling water and the knives and such."

She sighs and reaches across the table to pull the carrots and the knife toward her. The knife feels right in her hand, another kind of dancing when she lets herself feel the rhythm of it. When she looks back at Mal, there's a pile of finely chopped carrot in front of her, and he's staring at her, mouth open.
Wonderful Mal and River voices, as River begins to fit herself into the crew after Ariel.

Harry Potter

Several Ways to Apologize by Aria
After Sirius sent Snivellus down the Willow, James didn't talk to him for a week. Sirius thought this was particularly unfair, considering that he had a month's worth of detention and meanwhile Professor Dumbledore was acting like the sun shone out of James' arse. He started saying so, loudly, until James hauled off and hexed him. The shouting match that followed happened with legumes growing out of Sirius' ears. And after that everything was back to normal between them.

Remus, on the other hand, acted like nothing had happened at all, and that was much worse.
Nicely done prank-aftermath story.

bright yellow sky by zulu
When Jess dreams of leaving, she imagines coming home with some kind of triumph. What it is, she doesn't know yet. There's still a year left of school to think it through. What Jess wants to find, it feels like something out there in the twilight dark, something she'll go out and find. / Dillon's the porchlight. Dillon's like football; it's in her blood, and no matter what else happens in her life, she's always going to love it, no matter where she ends up. She'll always have that clear light of home in her eyes; to feel her heart full of Dillon and her family. Chaos isn't going to stop her. Everything, all that unknown she's chasing down, Jess is going to use it to fill herself up, until she can close her eyes and there's only the wide peaceful sky around her. Utterly lovely and true exploration of Jess Merriweather, a character canon hasn't fleshed out yet, but this story does it beautifully.

Friday Night Lights

Not Flesh and Blood by [livejournal.com profile] queenofthorns
Eric would rather spend an afternoon getting relationship advice Mac Magill than let the truth out of the deepest, darkest corner of his unspoken thoughts: he loves his boys. All of 'em, jackasses and smartasses, benchwarmers and superstars. He loves them for their occasional moments of sweetness and their constant low-level idiocy; he loves them for the boys they are and for the men they might become. But there are only two of them who've ever made Eric think If I had a son, this is who I'd want him to be. One was Jason Street. The other is hunched over a plate of untouched food, Eric's daughter by his side, politely listening to Buddy Garrity say something or other that's totally out of place. This totally made me bawl my face off at work (much like the episode [spoilers for 4.05 "the Son"]). Fathers and sons, Coach Taylor and Matt Saracen, in the aftermath. *sniffle*
