Veronica Mars

Note: These stories contain movie spoilers!

Life Goes On by [archiveofourown.org profile] igrockspock
She can't tell him that she doesn't want to be happy, that she's made for something more complicated than that. She's made for adrenaline and bad decisions that turn out okay in the end. Maybe adulthood means becoming the person who hides complicated truths from your parents, rather than letting them hide complicated truths from you. She rolls her eyes at herself; it sounds like the kind of pseudo-deep voiceover you'd hear at the end of a TV show. Excellent coda to the movie with a wonderful take on the Keith-Veronica relationship.

On and Off and On Again by [archiveofourown.org profile] igrockspock
Weevil's going back to jail for sure. Not tomorrow, or next week. Hopefully not even next year. But there's no way around it: guys like him, guys with too much skill and pride to spend their lives mopping floors and cutting lawns, end up in jail. Sorry abuela, but he's not spending his life begging rich white guys for jobs and biting his tongue when they disrespect him. Weevil, from post s3 through the movie. Oh, honey.

Harry Potter

Marginalia by [livejournal.com profile] magnetic_pole
There are three characters in our story, the first and most important of which is the Library itself, an enormous octagonal grey stone building covered over with a thick veil of ivy. Only a dozen narrow, barred windows and a heavy wooden door suggest that it might be anything but impregnable. Two dozen gargoyles perch on the roof and hiss and spit at passersby. Any trace of magic in your blood will afford you entry, but once you are inside the building, just as your eyes begin to adjust to the gloom, someone will stop you and kindly ask you to explain what you need. The Library is one of the most highly guarded places in the wizarding world, and it doesn't share its secrets with everyone. Absolutely gorgeous and layered story of the wizarding library, the librarians who curate it, and a visit from Sirius and Remus. Reads just like the best kind of fairy tale.

Star Trek Reboot

Lucky Man by [livejournal.com profile] penknife
"Okay, but why me? They rescued almost four thousand people from Tarsus."

Pike gives him a look like he's being particularly slow. "Try not to take this the wrong way, but of those four thousand people, some of them are dead, and most of the rest of them are boring. Seif is a poet, and Munroe has actually done some very interesting work on enriching dilithium that most of the viewing audience isn't going to understand, and then there's you. You saved the Federation. It means your name springs to mind."

"What am I supposed to say to that?" Jim says.

"That's up to you," Pike says. "I trust you to handle this. I just didn't want it to come as a surprise."
Melancholy story of Kirk dealing with the anniversary of Tarsus IV, and how his crew makes it easier for him.

A Strange New Story Every Time by [livejournal.com profile] gyzym
Really fantastic futurefic where Logan and Veronica meet up again ten years later and take a shot at being friends, and maybe a second (third?) chance at romance. I don't even ship Veronica/Logan and I enjoyed this. The banter is spot on, and Logan actually grew up into a decent human being.

"Too hungover to give as good as you get, now I know the apocalypse is nigh."

"Can we just go inside, please," he says despairingly. "Where there's less sunshine and fewer flashbulbs, I hear it's a glorious place."

"There's going to be organ music," she reminds him, and then she laughs as he groans and follows her to a pew, because she's deeply, impossibly cruel.

Highly enjoyable SPN/CM crossover in which the Winchesters and the BAU investigate the same case. "Anybody else, I'd say we were dealing with copycats or just a huge coincidence. But those guys escaped custody at least twice that I know of, and Dean Winchester's already faked his own death once before." / "There wasn't much left to find after that explosion in Colorado." Hotch folded his arms across his chest, somehow managed to look even more serious than usual. "You think they engineered the whole thing and escaped again?" / Morgan shrugged. Wry look at Logan and Veronica's relationship from Mac's POV.

Things that are easy, at least subjectively: becoming enemies when the girl you both loved more than oxygen (which is, scientifically speaking, a corrosive chemical that inevitably kills everything it touches, and maybe there's a reason so many lousy songwriters compare love to the air we breathe, because love does something pretty similar) goes and dies on you.

Sickeningly (and I mean that in the good way) possible way for events from the finale to play out, with Aaron Echolls making a comeback and everyone else left broken in the wake.
