"He thinks we should be clearer about the delineation between the personal and the professional."

"Well, I can't argue with that in principle," said Joan, "but since when do we let ourselves be defined by anyone else?"

"Since always," said Sherlock. "I believe that might actually be the definition of definition."

"Well, then it's time we stopped," said Joan. "You're my friend, and my employer, and my mentor, and I am your friend and your colleague and your sounding board. We can be all of those things, as long as we understand the nature of each of them."

"Clear boundaries," said Sherlock. "Consideration. Trust. Occasional bowls of late night ice cream."

The captain of her guard accompanies her wherever she goes, of course, ever watchful, and she sometimes catches him smiling at her out of the corner of her eye, when he thinks she's not looking. She knows he loved her before she was ever a queen, but still, she can't help but take a girlish pride in the ever-growing respect she sees in his eyes. She's not doing this for her Huntsman; but in a way, perhaps she is. For the embittered soldier he had once been, the grieving widower, the angry drunk, the desperate lout. For the women with scars cutting down their cheeks and the children orphaned by endless wars, for the men who'd stared at her white horse with hungry eyes and the Huntsman's wife who'd fought so valiantly and so futilely against Ravenna's desires. She avenges them with every stalk of wheat, every apple and every pear, every child who no longer has to go to bed hungry. Evocative and lovely.

Advice From Fire Lord Zuko To His Sister On The Raising Of Children (with annotations) by [personal profile] lizbee

I really can't say that enough. Not that Toph would let you. It's really not good an effective means of discipline good. Your kids are probably going to spend at least part of their lives hating you, but you don't have to give them a reason for it.
Exactly what it says on the tin. Hilarious and adorable.

Eight Principles of Yong by [archiveofourown.org profile] psocoptera
Zuko's tutors noted his diligence, while Azula's praised her brilliance, and everyone knew which one of those was worth something. So he had good penmanship, so what? There were palace scribes on hand at any hour if someone wanted something written. One of Zuko's less lethal hobbies saves the day after his agni kai with Azula. I really liked this type of firebending, and Zuko's cleverness in using it to make his case to the people.

After "The Southern Raiders," Zuko offers to help Katara practice bloodbending. OMG YES. THIS. Ahem. I mean, this is a great story about consent and bloodbending and Zuko wanting Katara to dominate him, and how they're both discovering they enjoy it and, well, yes. I've wanted a story like this since the first time Zuko went to his knees in "The Western Air Temple," and this one delivers.

Frozen by [archiveofourown.org profile] ArisTGD
Zuko falls at the North Pole, and when he comes around he's not sure if he's more angry at the Avatar, his uncle, or himself. A story of emotional growth and tea with too much salt in it. AU from "The Siege of the North Part 2." Highly enjoyable story of Zuko getting to the point of making the right choice a lot earlier, thanks to extended exposure to the Northern Water Tribe and the gaang.

The Grace That It Takes by [Anonymous]
In the end, there are no magical gifts for Sokka and he doesn't go straight home, but a ship and a maiden are both involved. Kyoshi Island is on his way, after all.

Standing on the deck next to Suki, watching her bright eager smile and the way she grips the rail as the prow slices through the waves on their way into harbor, it dawns on Sokka that this may not match the tales, but he can find nothing in this twist to complain about.

"Love is a very powerful emotion. Real love--like your mother's love for you, or yours for her--is the finest feeling. But it comes at a cost: the price we pay for that joy is the pain we feel when we are separated from the people we love.

"It is a hard lesson to learn when you are young," he continues, more softly, "but better to learn it now than when you are an old man like your uncle."

Zuko stands and begins to pace around the edge of the pond. "I know it hurts. Everyone knows that. But knowing it doesn't help anything."

"You are right, Prince Zuko. But I'm afraid I don't have any better wisdom to offer you in this situation."

Really lovely, understated Toph/Katara story. Katara's no mother hen, not really, and she'd never ask Toph to stay, but she's glad she can provide a base for her, for whenever she wants it. And she hopes, quietly, that one day Toph might consider it to be a home.

No One Asks About the Scars by [personal profile] voleuse
The first time they met another air bender, the earth whispered under Toph's feet. Her feet stuttered still while she wondered what it meant, and then she realized it was Aang's heart, pulsing joy to the rock beneath them. Her mother gave her a quelling glance and held the earring box out to her. "Mai, don't you understand? This is power. Do you think I've been taking you with me to meet with all the families of consequence in Caldera so that you could enjoy the free pastries?"

Azula, in prison, learning from her mistakes. Still herself, but wiser with the knowledge.
"Where there is life, there must be death. None of us can change this."

"You don't fear what I will do?" Azula said, because it was impossible to believe. That was her definition of self — she was fear itself, the bar by which all others measured themselves. That had escaped her for a time, but instead of softening her ferocity she'd found that these practices had brought her deeper into her original convictions. What she found in herself didn't align with her image of what a healer did.

"Your skills must be cultivated," Sifu said. When she looked at Azula, there was a knowing and a tenderness that made Azula feel completely exposed, all the more because Sifu did not flinch away from what she saw. When Sifu looked at her, Azula felt she was not fearful at all, that she was only what she needed to be. "What you will do is out of my hands."
