For One Last Landing by [archiveofourown.org profile] ignipes
Uhura remembers the first time she saw the two of them, sharing a flask on the recruit shuttle out of Riverside. They had both looked so disheveled and out of place that Uhura had spent the entire flight thinking increasingly unfavorable thoughts about Starfleet's recruiting standards and mentally composing angry notes to everybody who had promised her that her future classmates would only be the best of the best, the brightest minds in the Federation, the greatest hope for the future. She wonders how reality would have come across in a recruiting pitch: Join Starfleet! Explore new worlds! Travel to the stars! And someday those guys you thought were addicts or convicts who wandered onto your shuttle by accident will be your captain and CMO on the worst day in Federation history!

She's exhausted enough and frayed enough that she feels a giddy half-laugh, half-sob rising in her throat. Nyota covers her mouth to choke it down. Nobody notices except Spock, who only looks at her and says nothing.
Really lovely look at Uhura (and her relationships with Spock and Kirk) set at the end of the first movie.

Star Trex XI

Asymmetry by [livejournal.com profile] canis_takahari
Fantastically lovely Kirk/McCoy from the Academy through the first movie and beyond. "I'm living with children, mama," he complains. "I've been through this dorm shit before, and now I'm apparently in hell, living it all over again as completely undeserved punishment for a crime I still haven't determined. It's heinous."

"It's good for you," contradicts his mother, in that overly specific tone of voice McCoy has privately dubbed I Know It Sucks, Honey, But It Also Builds Character. "You need something new and different."

"I just said," McCoy huffs in exasperation. "It's not new and different. I'm twenty-eight, and I'm sleeping in a single bed that's the exact-not-quite length of my body and rooming with a twenty-two year old blue-eyed terror with a magnet hidden somewhere in his skull that exclusively attracts fists to the face. I've done this before, back when it was called medical school and I was legitimately a student. I'm regressing. Yesterday I ate cereal with a fork and didn't put on any pants all day."

His mother snorts, her expression nothing but fond and indulgent. "Leo, you're cracked if you think you can pull this Mature Old Man act with me. You got married so young, went to school even younger, just enjoy the chance to do it again. It'll be good for you," she repeats.

cautionary ways by [archiveofourown.org profile] mardia
"You have nice hands," he comments, and Bones's eyebrow shoots up.

"Thanks," he finally says, his voice drier than Vulcan in mid-summer. "Starting to think I should readjust your pain meds—"

"No, no, I mean it," Jim protests, and to prove it, he grabs one of Bones's hands, his thumb rubbing along the knuckles. "This is a nice hand, Bones." And he does mean it, Bones has great hands, big and warm, with long, steady fingers.

Bones is standing still, staring down at Jim with—well, Jim can't exactly figure out with what, not with his head as loopy as it is.

"I always like your hands," Jim insists, looking up at Bones and letting the truth spill out of him like water. "Just wish you'd touch me when I'm not injured, you know?"

Bones stares at him a moment longer, and then his gaze drops back down and away from Jim. "Yeah," he mutters. "Definitely need to readjust the pain meds."
Five times Jim asked Bones to sleep with him, and one time Bones finally said yes. <333 space boyfriends ftw!

Yet There's Still This Appeal by [archiveofourown.org profile] mardia
Jim has no problem admitting that to himself, because it makes sense—of course he loves Bones, because Bones is awesome, but this is not the romantic, flowers-and-candy kind of love that people make so much of a fuss about. It's not that, of course it's not that, because they're friends, they're as close as they can possibly be, and, if he's pressed, Jim will even admit that he needs Bones in his life—but it's not that kind of love. It's not that.

Still. Jim admits that it's easy to blur the lines a little bit, and maybe that's what he's been doing with this whole thing of bringing people to the room and sleeping with them in Bones' bed.
Jim keeps fucking people in Bones's bed. Lots of self-delusion and delicious pining on Jim's part.

A Christmas Card From The Middleman – 2012 by [livejournal.com profile] themiddleblog
In the past twelve months, Wendy Watson had honed the cool and sardonic demeanor that first got her this job into a weapon as powerful as a 30-Megahurt Definit-Kil Photrazon cannon. Even now, as she made an uncontrolled ascent over the city, hands white-knuckling one of the control line of a massive helium balloon in the shape of one of the adorable characters from "Ferrets of Fury" - the almost criminally popular game app that had taken the country's tablet and smartphone users by storm - her thoughts ricocheted with their usual post-modern tangentiality...but even as her mind ameliorated all the synaptic red alerts over her current predicament by busily trying to replace the lyric "high adventure beyond compare" from the theme to the old "Gummi Bears" cartoon show with the more descriptive "they're gelatinous with sucrose to spare" she truly could not tune out the screams of the fourteen year-old boy clutched beside her in the inflatable paws of this once adorable video game creation turned hateful harbinger of helium-filled hatred. Technically, this is not fanfic, since it was written by the show's creator, but *hands* it is too awesome not to rec.

"Please comment on the following lines of poetry: I long for scenes where man has never trod; A place where woman never smil'd or wept."

"Why is it always the men who are doing and the women who are feeling?" she snaps. "When I explore space, I'm going to smile and tread."

Marginalia by [livejournal.com profile] magnetic_pole
There are three characters in our story, the first and most important of which is the Library itself, an enormous octagonal grey stone building covered over with a thick veil of ivy. Only a dozen narrow, barred windows and a heavy wooden door suggest that it might be anything but impregnable. Two dozen gargoyles perch on the roof and hiss and spit at passersby. Any trace of magic in your blood will afford you entry, but once you are inside the building, just as your eyes begin to adjust to the gloom, someone will stop you and kindly ask you to explain what you need. The Library is one of the most highly guarded places in the wizarding world, and it doesn't share its secrets with everyone. Absolutely gorgeous and layered story of the wizarding library, the librarians who curate it, and a visit from Sirius and Remus. Reads just like the best kind of fairy tale.

Pike gives him a look like he's being particularly slow. "Try not to take this the wrong way, but of those four thousand people, some of them are dead, and most of the rest of them are boring. Seif is a poet, and Munroe has actually done some very interesting work on enriching dilithium that most of the viewing audience isn't going to understand, and then there's you. You saved the Federation. It means your name springs to mind."

"What am I supposed to say to that?" Jim says.

"That's up to you," Pike says. "I trust you to handle this. I just didn't want it to come as a surprise."

Really fantastic futurefic where Logan and Veronica meet up again ten years later and take a shot at being friends, and maybe a second (third?) chance at romance. I don't even ship Veronica/Logan and I enjoyed this. The banter is spot on, and Logan actually grew up into a decent human being.

"Can we just go inside, please," he says despairingly. "Where there's less sunshine and fewer flashbulbs, I hear it's a glorious place."

When she was a kid she thought she was going to grow up to be a spy -- a secret agent. With boots that would let her slink silently down dark corridors, and some kind of special secret weapon, like the phasers she saw in vids but quieter and sleeker. Working on the side of good, to help bring down the Bad Guys, standing outside their doors and listening in on their secret messages.

Yeah, definitely that. Or else a pirate.
Nyota Uhura is fiercer and more awesome than everyone. possibly ever.

Pomegranate by [livejournal.com profile] loneraven
Nyota goes home after the movie. This is gorgeous, and it made me cry. Her mother hugs her fiercely, without care or delicacy but with love, and Nyota thinks about the long nights she spent in this room, sitting straight-backed at her desk while her mother lay on the bed, leaning on a stack of pillows, grading papers. She tried to persuade her daughter to sleep late on weekends and not to drive herself so hard, and Nyota didn't listen; so Nyota studied late into the night, every night, and her mother made tea after dark and poured out mute, loving cups. Nyota passed the entrance exams for the Academy with the highest distinction, and took packets of tea leaves to San Francisco.

"I'm so sorry," her mother says, softly. "I'm so, so sorry. I know I can't understand." She lets go and stands up. "Let me make you some tea, baby, okay?"

She's gone without waiting for an answer, which is just how Nyota remembers things should be.

How To Write Letters Home to Your Sisters (Notes) by [livejournal.com profile] danahid
You try to describe Gaila, how when she laughs, her freckled nose wrinkles; how the early morning sunlight bounces off her red curls; how her skin glows green with health. You try to convey just how loud Gaila is when she sings "My Baby Just Cares For Me" at the top of her lungs. She is so loud that she drowns out Nina Simone, you tell your sisters. Despite your best efforts, you are sure that your descriptions don't do Gaila justice. Your sisters can't possibly understand from your paltry words that Gaila is gusts and storms of being, that she lives every minute of every day with joy and truth. They can't understand that when Gaila invites you to dance with her, she teaches you things your instructors only know in the abstract. Because you're a good big sister, you keep trying to explain. You look up synonyms and draw pictures. In the end, you write: Freedom isn't just a word. It's a way of being. Beautiful story of the letters Uhura writes home to her sisters.

It was charity too, she supposes, but given directly to her because she liked it, not discarded because some woman wanted to clean out her closet. It is also the only thing she's ever owned that did not serve some specific purpose, and this is something she can't say even for the car. "I have unfucked the transporter." Kirk and Uhura are being held at knifepoint by space pirates. And then the real trouble starts. Absolutely HILARIOUS and DARLING at the same time. Uhura for the win!

The Language of Grief by [livejournal.com profile] rosenskimmer
As Spock turns toward him, where Chekov expects to see a comfortable control, a Vulcan sensibility of logic, a benediction of knowledge from the one who seems to have forgotten more than Chekov can ever know, there is nothing. And all the tactical strategies he’s learned, all the technical manuals he’s memorized, all the sonnets and monologues and songs he can recite, they’re useless here, in this pivotal moment. The language of grief is something Star Fleet cannot teach him. Beautiful and heartbreaking.

Soft and lovely Kirk/McCoy. *happy sigh*

Five anniversaries and birthdays of the Enterprise crew. Hilariously funny right up until it hits you with the heartbreak. Lovely.

People Who Repair Quantums, or Five Planets The Enterprise Never Visited by [livejournal.com profile] ignipes
"So you're a drug-addicted messianic cult dedicated to drinking your own distilled urine so your descendants generations down the road can grow palm trees. How's that working out for you?" Awesome set of mini crossovers. Gets the voices just right.

Symmetry in Orbit by [livejournal.com profile] betweenthebliss
Pavel has been waiting all his life for a friend like this. Between classes they debate derivative theoretics outside in the Academy's regal shadow, Pavel stretched out beneath a tree, River pacing barefoot with blades of grass tickling her ankles. The table in the alcove facing the ocean on the fourth floor of the library becomes theirs; they study until late at night beside the open window, listening to the sounds of the sea. On the weekends they take the BART to the beach, sharing a pair of headphones to tune in to the Vulcan Science Academy's weekly podcast, and Pavel walks in the surf with his pant legs rolled up, while ahead of him River dances joyfully with the waves. Chekov and River being BABY GENIUSES together at the Academy. *hearts*

Adorable Kirk/McCoy with them being all BFF-y and encouraging the gossip about them on board the Enterprise.

At a Window by [livejournal.com profile] magstopia
"Your mother sounds like a wise and kind woman." His eyes fluttered shut as he nodded. "Her son is a reflection of all that is good in her." Beautiful and moving look at Uhura (and through her, Spock) after the battle of Vulcan.

"So basically," Bones says, "it's just going to be you and a bunch of guys living together, and hanging out with each other all the time, and showering together, and getting trashed with each other every night, and then passing out next to each other." / "Yeah!" Jim beams enthusiastically behind his stupid glasses. / "Isn't that a little…homoerotic?" Kirk tries to start a frat at Starfleet Academy. Hilarity ensues. Even funnier if you've ever actually spent any time with fratboys.

Family by [livejournal.com profile] schweinsty
James Tiberius Kirk does not need a family. Lovely look at Kirk becoming captain and everyone else meshing to become his crew.

5 Times Kirk Didn't Spit It Out and One Time He Did by [livejournal.com profile] briecheesie
Exactly what it says on the tin. Lovely. Because Kirk ♥ his crew. (and Bones especially.)

Four Consequences of the Unexpected and Unlikely Friendship between James T. Kirk and Nyota Uhura by [livejournal.com profile] trisfic
When all else failed, Jim always came back to the Vulcan thing. Nyota didn't quite know why. She accused him of racism, which he reasonably countered with the fact that he had it on very good authority that he himself was capable of sustained emotional intimacy with her very boyfriend ("Oh really? This is the argument you're going to make, to me? He almost nervepinched you three times yesterday"). He had amply demonstrated his complete lack of discrimination when it came to his own partners, sometimes resulting in hungover mess hall discussions about his exciting new career of adventures among the stars. After a while she began to suspect Jim just found the word "Vulcan" to be really funny. Kirk and Uhura form an unlikely friendship. Uhura is awesome, Kirk is hilarious, and Scotty has a cameo that made me die with laughter.

From the Greek "xenos" by [livejournal.com profile] pogrebin
Nyota's favourite is a short paper written when Grayson was quite young. It is about the language of taboo and exclusion. Things unsaid, and things unsayable. Though the taboos themselves may differ, linguistic methods for dealing with them do not. Grayson postulates, rather cheekily, that euphemism and elision are universal phenomena. This is why Nyota Uhura picks xenolinguistics: the ways in which different cultures communicate might differ, but the ways in which they fail to communicate do not. She finds it strangely comforting that language makes them all alien to each other. Brilliant, sharp look at Uhura.

I Love You Like I Love Pizza by [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock
Gaila loves Jim Kirk the way she loves pizza: that is, more than everything else, but not to the exclusion of everything else. This is both adorable and amazingly sense-making.

In A Moment Close To Now by [livejournal.com profile] thistlerose
"I'm taking you out," said Jim, "if I have to sedate and drag you. Put the bourbon away. Get changed. Into something nice. Not too nice, though. Don't want anyone to think we're on a date." His sudden grin showed his teeth, almost blindingly white against his tanned skin. / "It's my birthday," McCoy said. "Shouldn't I be allowed to do whatever the hell I want?" / "You have to celebrate. Years from now – if you don't get burned to a crisp by a solar flare or sucked out of an airlock – you'll look back and wish to God you'd done something exciting for your thirtieth birthday. I know you will, because I'll be there and I'll keep reminding you." McCoy and Kirk are oblivious bffs who are really in love. Aw, boys.

Spock and Uhura have an encounter in a bookstore. There is poetry and flirtation. Lovely.

Linguistics 101; or, Thirteen Ways To Say I Love You by [livejournal.com profile] loneraven
"Show them cross-cultural commonality, show them how we're all different and the same, show them how linguistic groups express themselves, in short: tell them how to proposition the galaxy. Ways To Say I Love You, 101." / Spock raised an eyebrow. "Nyota, while I fully endorse your objectives, I think this plan would be unwise." / "Not at all," she said, primly, standing up and clearing away the dishes. "All the ways to say, 'I love you'. It'll be a hit. I'll do you some research." Uhura/Linguistics=OTP! Really lovely look at Uhura and through her, the crew of the Enterprise.

A Long Way to a Terrible Joke by [livejournal.com profile] rawles
"Spock, seriously. You and Uhura. How did that happen?" Kirk finally asks the question. This is adorable.

The Love Boat by [livejournal.com profile] chaletian
"I think it's great that Starfleet doesn't have non-fraternisation rules for starships." Hee hee hee! It's almost like "La Ronde" for ST:XI, except hilarious, not depressing.

Lunch and Other Obscenities by [livejournal.com profile] rheanna27
Utterly wonderful look at how Uhura and Gaila became friends.

The Proper Treatment of Sexorexia by [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock
Gaila does not get her new roommate at all. They've been at school 3 whole weeks now, and she hasn't had sex with anyone. Not even once. She wonders if she should do something. Sex is as important as food, after all. If her roommate were anorexic, she should definitely try to help. Sex anorexia (sexorexia?) is probably just as bad and life-threatening. Plus, it seems to put her roommate in a really bad mood. The situation definitely calls for action. But what should she do? Gaila, attempting to become friends with Uhura.

Really lovely Kirk/McCoy, with pining.
