X-Men: First Class

Eggshell by [archiveofourown.org profile] stickmarionette
What happened on the beach was a brutal illustration of the world outside his private hopes and wishes, both for human and mutant-kind. If anyone thinks for even a moment that Charles could accept that and move on - if anyone knows him well enough to know -

Raven must. She's always been quicker to understand these shifts than him. When she left, it was to honour her own conviction, but she also left with the certainty that they would fight alongside each other soon enough.

After all, it was she who had taught him that to be born with advantages others don't have and to do nothing positive with it would be cowardly in the extreme.

Charles will not accept the world as it is, any more than Erik ever could. As it is now, the fragile shell of his patience will crack very soon, and nobody, not even Erik, would enjoy what comes after that. No, better that his efforts to make the world palatable proceed with some restraint.
Charles is not the pacifist Erik thinks he is. Sharp look at Charles and the long game he's playing re: mutant rights. Author says it's the first in a series, but I think it stands alone perfectly well.

"You're trying to turn me into one of your X-Men."

"They won't be the X-Men, this time." Charles' eyes burn with certainty; it's like watching a moment of religious conversion. "This time, we'll all be following you."

Erik doesn't know whether that's what he always used to want or whether it's the scariest thing he's ever heard.

As Charles burrows down beside him, he murmurs, "Stop looking through the lens of the past. It can only cloud your vision now. See clearly, Erik. See what you've done, what you can do."

"The lens of the past tells me you're an idealist. Sometimes you fail to see facts."

"I don't need the lens of the past to tell me that sometimes you fail to see possibilities."
this time, it's Erik who goes back to the past to fix things. Lovely and melancholy.
