"Maddie!" she said, twisting in a little pirouette. "Come dance!"
"I can't," I said.
"Of course you can!" Julie said. "I shall run up reams of pilots for us both, and we'll dance till dawn." She grabbed my hands. "Come dance, Maddie, do," she said, and gave me her beseeching doe eyes.
Who could resist Julie when she looked like that? She tugged me toward the dance floor, and she'd got me to the edge of it before I recalled that I couldn't dance. "I'd love to, but I don't know how to foxtrot," I protested.
"Don't know how to foxtrot!" She'd had a little too much to drink, I think: her voice was a little too loud, all her sentences ending in exclamation points. She was a bubbly drunk, like it brought out all the joy in her. "I'll teach you," she said, and swung me into her arms: one hand between my shoulder blades, the other holding my hand tight. This is a really nice happy moment between Julie and Maddie that captures both of them wonderfully, and totally made me cry at the end.

"My grandfather has a motorbike garage in Manchester," Maddie said. She couldn't remember the last time she'd had an actual conversation about more than the terrible food or the conditions of the last flight. But she was enjoying this one with a girl who also loved engines even though her accent was more BBC than a mechanic's. *sniffle* This is really lovely, and I was so pleased to read a story where Maddie makes another friend.

'Mother has a strong will and a dry tongue,' she said, 'but to drive a mage to spell her death? That-- Wait, there's no mage on the Overfell but the one at Re Albi.'
'Yes,' said Beech. 'The wizard Aspen.'
'I don't know his name,' said Apple impatiently. 'She never told me that, but Re Albi-- Yes, she said that the mage there had taken a dislike to her because she was a woman.'
'It can't just have been that,' exclaimed Spark. Apple swung her head like a bull to look at him and said, 'For some men that's all that's needed.' Really fantastic post-Tehanu story - I love getting to see Tenar and Ged from Apple's POV, and this story brings both Apple and Earthsea to life, as well as capturing the characters vividly.

Jean and Locke, just before the start of Red Seas Under Red Skies. Feels like it could slip right into canon.

"Know this, Attolia. While you sleep and while you wake, I am the one moving behind your walls. I am the one dancing on your roof. I am the one who can catch all others and who no one but you can catch. Only I." Lovely look at Gen and his relationship with Irene.

Nightingale finally tells Peter about Ettersberg. Really well done. Sensitive handling of a difficult subject that's in character as well as moving, heartbreaking and yet hopeful at the end.

Really fantastic casefile from Nightingale's POV, that really captures his character, and also gives us a great look at Peter - and magic - from an outside POV.
