A message, a fight, a question, an answer; or, a year after the war, Costis navigates court politics and the secrets that aren't. I love it when Costis figures stuff out! <3

Why are the countries of Sounis and Eddis called by masculine names, but the country of Attolia by a feminine one? by [archiveofourown.org profile] sigaloenta

A handful of years after the war with the Mede, Kamet is asked to become secretary of the archives. I really like how this caps off Kamet's arc, and also his interplay with the other characters is great and in character.

I Spy by [archiveofourown.org profile] dolphin_ring
A series of connected missing scenes set throughout The Thief. Or, what Eddis and Attolia were doing while Gen was stealing a seal, getting tossed in prison, and then hiking across the countryside. Exactly what it says on the tin. I enjoyed this look at what was happening offscreen during The Thief.

Under the orange trees by [archiveofourown.org profile] dolphin_ring
A tale of calf love, of a lonely thief watching a princess dance alone in the kitchen garden. A lovely scene, shot through with melancholy for both Gen and Irene. <3

The Queen's Thief

everything else left up to you by [archiveofourown.org profile] hippolytas
"They look just like you." Gen caught and kissed one of Hector's tiny flailing hands.

"They look like babies," she said. They were small and red and impossibly fragile and sometimes when Attolia held them, she could only think of all the things she'd broken.

"They have your nose," said Eugenides, as if he hadn't heard her, "and your eyes." He ran a finger lightly over his son's soft skin. "They are going to be as beautiful as their mother and we are going to have to beat their suitors away with sticks."

"You can exile all of the suitors to Ferria," she told him, finally smiling and nudging him with her knee. "We'll start a colony."
This is a fantastic coda to the series, with a pitch perfect Irene voice and a sure and steady hand on the narrative and the plot. Wonderful!

Every sip of wine he takes and every scrap of cloth that he wears are gifts that his master bestows. This house, my position at the temple, my freedom. You, here with me. Eugenides offers me a life full of contentment."

"Kamet, I-"

"Suppose he should choose to take it away."

Dream a Little Dream by [archiveofourown.org profile] osprey_archer
"Maddie!" she said, twisting in a little pirouette. "Come dance!"

"I can't," I said.

"Of course you can!" Julie said. "I shall run up reams of pilots for us both, and we'll dance till dawn." She grabbed my hands. "Come dance, Maddie, do," she said, and gave me her beseeching doe eyes.

Who could resist Julie when she looked like that? She tugged me toward the dance floor, and she'd got me to the edge of it before I recalled that I couldn't dance. "I'd love to, but I don't know how to foxtrot," I protested.

"Don't know how to foxtrot!" She'd had a little too much to drink, I think: her voice was a little too loud, all her sentences ending in exclamation points. She was a bubbly drunk, like it brought out all the joy in her. "I'll teach you," she said, and swung me into her arms: one hand between my shoulder blades, the other holding my hand tight.
This is a really nice happy moment between Julie and Maddie that captures both of them wonderfully, and totally made me cry at the end.

The Surly Bonds of Earth by [archiveofourown.org profile] Emily
"My grandfather has a motorbike garage in Manchester," Maddie said. She couldn't remember the last time she'd had an actual conversation about more than the terrible food or the conditions of the last flight. 'I don't know his name,' said Apple impatiently. 'She never told me that, but Re Albi-- Yes, she said that the mage there had taken a dislike to her because she was a woman.'

'It can't just have been that,' exclaimed Spark. Apple swung her head like a bull to look at him and said, 'For some men that's all that's needed.'

The Queen's Thief

my secrets are doors by Fahye
Really lovely and sharp look at Irene, and how honest she forces herself to be within her own head. Attolia loves as she imagines the gods must have loved, when they mingled more intimately with mortals: her feelings are lightning bolts and transmutation and the endless rage of the sky against the sea. For the sake of the man asleep beside her she would uproot forests and send ash gushing down from mountains, if it lay within her power. This seems a blasphemous kind of thought, but it's not one that she could deny without lying.

The Silver Moonlight by Miri Cleo (miri_cleo)
Why she continued to bait and hurt him gently out of her own guilt, she did not know. Why he loved her despite it, she would no longer had the strength to question, that night at least. Love did not come easily to her. She had told him that before, and it was still true. But if her fondness, if the twisting inside of her, the palpitating of her heart at his smiles, no matter how wicked, at his injuries, no matter how slight...if that was love, she embraced it. Really sharp yet romantic look at Gen and Irene's relationship from Irene's POV.

The Thief Series - Megan Whalen Turner

The Landscape After Cruelty by elanne
There were the moments like this: waking with Irene's hair in his face, the curve of her back against his side. / There were the moments after, when he lifted his arm to caress her with a hand that was no longer there. / "Use the other hand," she said, and did not move when he brushed the stump of his wrist against her shoulder. They never shrunk from what they had done; it was the only way they were able to know each other. / They lived moving from gentleness to cruelty and back, in the fragile spaces between love and fear and forgiveness. They ached with it, the rawness of it all, and the tenderness. / They woke tangled together in the mornings. Utterly perfect look at Gen and Irene - beautifully written and spot-on with the voices. I love this universe so much and this story is a brilliant addition to it. Plus! The title is spot on *and* from "Snow and Dirty Rain" by Richard Siken, a poem I adore. <3

Orange Blossom by shewhoguards
Lovely glimpse of Irene before she becomes Attolia.

Tears At Bedtime by Vilakins
"Some people are improved by misfortune." The queen stepped forward and lightly touched his black hair where it curled over his ear. / Eugenides turned his head so that her hand was on his cheek. "I'm not. I sulk," he said with a distinct lack of shame. Lovely, in character look at Gen and Irene on their wedding night.

Gentleman Bastard Sequence - Scott Lynch

Lingering On by Lise
"I get worried when you're thinking too much." / [...] "That's strange. I've been thinking my whole life and you never worried before." / "You weren't dying before." / "Are you still harping on that? I don't feel like I'm dying. It was probably a bluff." / "If you believed that you wouldn't have tricked me into taking the antidote." / "I did not trick you. I slipped it in your drink. You drank it. That's not trickery. It's subtlety. There's a difference and I've done both so I know it." / "You motherfucker," Jean said, vehemently and with the utmost sincerity, and Locke couldn't help saying, "Never knew her, actually, but I did like yours," which earned him a wallop on the back of the head. Oh, *heart* This is exactly what I wanted - both of them trying to live with the aftermath of the end of the second book while the threat of Locke's death hangs over everything.
