Many years after the war with the Medes, the ground begins to shake in Eddis. In the city of Sounis, the queen of Eddis mourns her homeland. Her husband is there to comfort her. Really lovely, soft and achy future fic about Sophos and Helen. <3

American Gods

do zla boga by kangeiko
So why, astute readers may wonder, do some older gods survive? Why are they, too, not forgotten in the wind, lost to newer gods with deeper thorns and larger armies at their back? / If I tell you it is good deeds and miracles, you will know that I am lying. Sharp, creepy story well in keeping with the tone of the book.

The Graveyard Book

Tipping The Balance by Laliandra
“So, it was a dark and stormy night in Prague,” Eli intoned. Silas frowned and said, “Yes, it was, actually.” “Wow, you two really did grow up together,” Jojo said with a snicker and Bod and Silas exchanged the puzzled glance of the pop culturally illiterate. While I don't really buy the pairing, this is a lovely story of Bod growing up outside the graveyard, and Silas coming in and out of his life, still. Really captures the feel of the book, and the ending is perfect.

Sandman

Schizophasia by Imricita (whatimages)
She tried to make friends with a fairy tale once. It was about a princess who was a cat with emerald eyes; but under the force of Delirium's two coloured gaze, it started to fracture and warp, and soon it wasn't about anything at all. The emerald-eyed cat chases Delirium's fish throughout her realm, and no one remembers her name. Only Delirium remembers it; Delirium remembers everything. Destiny has read much, but Delirium was once Delight, and she forgets nothing. Absolutely dazzling story of the drive to create and the toll it extracts. Paul wants to write a poem. Delirium wants a friend. A bargain is struck. Brilliant.

Lucifer

And End With A Song - by Sullen Siren
"But things will be different." / "They always are. Or they appear to be. The change itself is a constant enough to make it invalidating. Change is constant, and thus nothing really changes," Lucifer said. / Her lips pursed. "You're kind of full of crap, sometimes." / "We can't all be omniscient." / "No, but you're closer than most." Lovely, in character story where Lucifer tells Elaine about Michael. *sniffle*

Copulative Dissonance by Vulgarweed
Short, sharp vignettes featuring Lucifer and Mazikeen, with fantastic characterization and humor.

Sandman

Pieces of Time by [livejournal.com profile] scarletts_awry
The scene in Brief Lives where Delirium and Dream visit Destiny, from Del's POV. I like this story a lot - it captures the wayward nature of Delirium's train of thought, how she digresses and digresses back around to the point maybe even she doesn't realize she's making until she's made it. Lovely. Grief is a floodwater, and it cuts deep enough that it belongs to Delirium. Grief is madness. Grief is knowledge.

Lucifer

Even the Angels by Moontyger
Michael and Lucifer have a conversation. Perfect little snapshot, with one hell of an ending. Short but packs a punch.

Crux by numinicious
While asking for his alliance against the Lilim, Lucifer schools Rudd on a few home truths. I really like Lucifer here. "Are you going to be the pot or the kettle, Morningstar? You, the first among all angels, the cream of the crop, one might say — and you fell. To this pit, to the bottom." Rudd smiles, cruelly. "The metaphor works both ways, Lucifer." "And look at me now." Lucifer matches his smile, kindly. "A Creator. Sometimes you have to fall before you can rise, Rudd."

Gloria In Exelsis Deo (maybe the highest, but not-Heaven) by kassie
I *love* this. I love how it captures Elaine perfectly. I love Duma and his worrying and gardening and his care-taking and his bliss at PIE (I love that there is PIE in a DINER with forward waitresses offering advice). I love grumpy Gabriel and his eons-old feelings of sibling rivalry, and Lucifer's presence at the end, how Elaine still needs his validation, still loves him and how he, in his way, loves her. *heart*

Lucifer
Happy Families by SullenSiren
I really like this. It's everything about the Lucifer-Elaine relationship I find interesting - how they're alike, how they're different, how they're not quite family but almost, and how she amuses and surprises even him. And I really like the musings on godhood.

Sandman
An Awfully Deep Well by Laura JV
Absolutely love - lyrical piece that gets the essentials of each of the Endless in small sketches. I especially like the Delirium and Death sections.

The Taste of Honey by Edo no Hana
Oh wow. I ... I have no words. This starts as one thing - highly enjoyable, a day with Death and Dream, and they're so in character, and then it becomes something larger and deeper and more painful, and true. Amazing and beautiful.

Delirium and Delight. Oh, oh, Del... Oh, this breaks my heart and is so perfectly *right*. I can't even articulate how perfect and beautiful and achy and resigned this is, and how much I love it. Absolutely fabulous.

Supernatural/Lucifer
Faster Than a Roulette Wheel by Scy
Lucifer visits the roadhouse and has a few choice words for Dean. Lucifer's a canny, twisty bastard, and I like that Dean is able to figure him out, to some degree. Lucifer's assessment of the brothers, and why Dean is the one he approaches, rings true.

Perfectly Peppermint Patty. And Marcie, too.

Lucifer
Come What May by Catrinella
Excellent look at how Mazikeen can never really escape the tension between love and duty, her loyalty to Lucifer v. her loyalty to the Lilim, even when she's meant to be having a tender interlude with Lucifer rather than a conference of war.

Calvin & Hobbes
Transmogrification by [livejournal.com profile] hyperfocused
While I'm not sold on the epilogue, the rest of this fic is pure brilliance - Calvin (and Hobbes) as he grows up, bored and attitudinal, and then brilliant and freaky. Very cool

Delicate fic where Polyhymnia O'Keefe meets Emily Gregory (the blind pianist of The Young Unicorns) and they hit it off. SportsNight

Respice Finem by scrunchy
Absolutely awe-inspiring. Subtitled "Look to the end: 12 Latin Phrases That Aren't Quo Vadimus aka, Some Ways It Didn't End," Scrunchy dreams up twelve different ways SportsNight could have ended, but didn't, each one of them as true as the actual ending (truer in a couple cases, imo). All the main players are here, in various groups and combinations - some of these are sad ((Spero Melior made me sniffle) some are happy (Ecce Homo made me squee like a little fangirl), some are just *true* (Disjecta Membra feels *right*), and one is absolutely gut-wrenching (Pro Memoria gave me chills).

Go. Read. And praise Scrunchy with great praise, for her tang is top notch.

X-Files/Lucifer
Devil to Pay by John Blonde
An X-Files/Sandman crossover featuring Mulder running into the Devil himself at an expensive new restaurant in Georgetown. He catches the pianist’s attention, and is off on what he thinks will be an erotic adventure that turns into something he didn’t quite expect. I like Mulder’s sense of disconnection and disorientation, and his acceptance of how he can’t have what he wants because of the life he leads, and how he knows this night will haunt him for a long time.

quote:
They move closer and slowly flesh is exposed, tasted, smoothed. They do not kiss. It seems an unnecessary intimacy. They move toward the bed with little awkwardness, shedding shoes and trousers with hardly more. Mulder feels he has the right to stare now, and the body before him requires, demands, appreciation. Animate marble, sculpted, created, even the hairs perfectly placed.

He is not allowed to look for long, but the impression remains on his retina even as Lux bears him backwards on the bed. The pianist's hands explore him, and Mulder treasures the sound of his layered saxophone voice saying, "You are very beautiful."

Nothing happens quickly. Mulder thinks of food again, for this is the slow simmering that he has always wanted. Because Lux is unselfconscious, he must also be. As he has never been before, he is without shame, giving himself up to his senses.
