"I could teach you."

Startled, Lily blinked. "What?"

"To fly. I could teach you how to fly. Properly, I mean, not that rubbish from first year."

She sat back in her seat, sighing. She'd known he wouldn't understand — after all, wasn't he one of the very purebloods she'd described? — but still it stung. "That's… that's not really the point, Potter."

"I know," he said, seriously enough that she believed him. "But I can't fix those other things. I can teach you how to fly, though."

Immediately she was shaking her head and folding her arms protectively across her chest. "I don't know…"

"You were right before," he went on. "You don't need to know how to fly. There are loads of other ways to get around, and it doesn't mean you're bad at being a witch. But I still think you're missing out, and you shouldn't have to miss out because of something that happened in first year, or because a bunch of inbred idiots want to drag our society back to the Dark Ages." His expression was earnest now, the usual mischievous glint gone from his eyes. "You don't have to do it if you don't want. But if you'd like to learn, I'd like to help. What do you think?"
James takes Lily flying. Oh my heart. <333

The Losers/Avengers

one for the road by [archiveofourown.org profile] beardsley
Silly little white girl, thinking all her training and all her skills would be enough to get her a seat at the grownups' table. Aisha loved proving her wrong, back in Sarajevo. She loved proving her wrong with her forearm against Red's throat, Red's gun under Aisha's chin and her thighs clamped so tight around Aisha's waist Aisha thought she might actually have to kill her to get away. She didn't. She's glad. This way, they get to do it again. Sharp, hot Aisha/Natasha.

The Story by [archiveofourown.org profile] Kass
"I recognize your allergy to religion."

"That's one way to put it," Mal agrees.

"But would you object if I held a service on Christmas Eve?"

The request surprises him, though he's not sure why it should. "Object?" Mal shrugs. "What you do on your own time is your own business."

"So you wouldn't have a problem with my holding Christmas services on your ship."

"Wouldn't expect too many people to come," Mal cautions him. "This ain't exactly the godliest of crews."

Shepherd Book's smile is wry. "Doesn't rightly matter. I've observed Christmas all by my ownself before. I can do it again, if need be."

He shouldn't ask, but his curiosity gets the better of him. "Then why bother with a service?"

"It matters to me that I tell the story," the shepherd says quietly. "Whether or not anyone's listening is another matter entirely."
I'm so sad we never got a Firefly holiday episode, but this fits the bill. Everyone sounds just like themselves. <3

A blur of blue up the front of Jayne's t-shirt, and there is a noise like someone hitting a steak. Jayne staggers, cross-eyed with the effort of looking at the thing astride his nose. The creature butts him again.

Elementary/The Good Wife

with her killer graces and her secret places by [personal profile] crossedwires
Joan opens the front door and leans on the door frame, projecting nonchalance as much as she can. "You don't call, you don't write, you don't reply to any of my messages. I was starting to think you broke up with me and forgot to let me know."

"We're not in a relationship, remember?" In her boots, Kalinda is a good three inches taller than a barefoot Joan, who straightens up as Kalinda reaches for her. "I've been caught up at work. You know how it goes."

Joan stands on her tiptoes, balancing on Kalinda's arm, so they're almost eye-to-eye. "I could've sworn there were phones in Chicago the last time I visited."

"Yeah, well... Surprise?" says Kalinda, with a tiny forgive-me? smile. And Joan is lost, between that smile, those boots and this kiss.

The Bourne Legacy

really lovely first time for Marta and Aaron.

Choosing Family by [archiveofourown.org profile] DesireeArmfeldt
Sometimes, when the ship gets too noisy and her head too crowded, River retreats into the empty shuttle and closes the door behind her. It doesn't help much, but she can stare out at the black and the stars, and if she concentrates hard enough, she can fill herself with all that dark empty silence for a little while.

Sometimes, when bits are flying in all directions because she doesn't have enough gravity to keep them all in girl-shape, Wash will tell the Captain he's going out for a run around the block, and he'll fire up the shuttle, and River will slip in behind him and shut the door. He never asks her along, but he always gives her a smile and a nod as she buckles in beside him. And he never goes without her.

It's almost like floating alone among the stars. Wash doesn't talk to her unless she speaks first, and his thoughts are partly ship and partly slow and still and streaked with starlight.
really lovely (and heartbreaking, in light of things) look at Wash and Zoe via River, with a great River-voice.

Gilmore Girls

The Shower Curtains Have (Hippo) Eyes by [livejournal.com profile] dollsome
"Luke. Are you seeing this??"

"I'm seeing it."

"Uh, no. If you were seeing this, then you would see that this--" She pauses, does some Vanna White arms-- "obviously has Lorelai Gilmore written all over it."

'This' is a shower curtain covered in cartoon hippos with really big eyes. The eyes of some hippos who have been dabbling with some illegal substances. (As hippos do.) Just between you and her, Lorelai's not really that into it. She is not the same woman who once fell in love at first sight with what her mother christened a "semi-pornographic, leering monkey lamp." She's got higher standards for her semi-pornographic interior design decisions these days. But. The hippos have 'Luke will freak in the face of us!' written aaaall over 'em. She has to at least tease him with the horrifying possibility of a life where this dwells in their bathroom.

"You know what," Luke says then, with this appraising little nod, "yeah. I can see it."
Ahahahahaha! This is an adorable and pitch-perfect post-series Luke/Lorelai story.

Lilo & Stitch

all your heart-melodies by [archiveofourown.org profile] thingswithwings
At seven, Lilo wants to grow up to be an intergalactic space hero.

Stitch shows her how to build plasma guns (Nani puts them on a high shelf), how to rig up a can opener and a radio into a machine that will open a portal to an alternate universe (Nani says she can't do it in the house) and how to first swallow and then regurgitate useful objects, like handcuff keys or quarters (Nani, though disgusted, can't help but be impressed). She and Stitch roam the forests and swim the ocean and are the best of friends, and though Lilo doesn't talk much to other kids, she has Stitch and she has Nani and they are all she needs. She dreams at night of a future among space aliens, green and wriggly, tall and blue, grave and comic and of infinite variety, and when she wakes she can still see their cities behind her eyes, gleaming and verdant.
This made me all teary and achy in exactly the same way as the movie. *sniffle* Oh, my heart.

Firefly/Captain America

Time Watches From the Shadow by [personal profile] shadesofbrixton
Steve has the common sense - or good grace - to look a little bashful now, like that'll do a gorram thing for Mal's opinion of him. "I'm looking for someone - I was told you were the man to come to. That this ship did things other people wouldn't."

"She maybe does," Mal monotones, tipping his head at Inara, who rolls her eyes.

Steve sighs, obviously fed up with his treatment of the "lady." Well, good. He deserves as much frustration as Mal's feeling. "A - a friend of mine is trapped in a facility." He's searching Mal's face, those baby blues suddenly real sharp. "I heard your crew had experience - "

Mal's gun is out and tipped up under Steve's chin before he can finish the sentence. "Heard from who."

To the stranger's credit, he doesn't stammer under the press of steel. "Shepherd Book," he says calmly.
Eeee! Steve and Bucky 500 years in the future! Bucky trapped by the same people who had River and Steve asks Mal's help to get him back! Mal being frustrated that everything is out of his control. I love this so much!

"Jensen, we need to... talk," said Clay, like the words pained him.

"We’ve noticed that you seem..." Aisha began.

"Please stop," said Jensen. "Please, please, stop."

"Your head is up your ass," she finished, matter-of-fact. The kind of matter-of-fact that meant Aisha was about wade into topics that made her deeply uncomfortable, like feelings. Shit. "Tell us why."

"Would you believe me if I said I didn’t know?"

"Sadly," said Clay, "yes."

It's been awhile since Eliot saw his little brother. Staring down the barrel of Arthur's gun was not exactly how he'd hoped a reunion might happen, but he has to admit the odds had been better than even.

"What's up with your hair?" he asks curiously.

Arthur's jaw tightens like he's chewing on his first response, his brows furrowing in a way that Eliot can admit looks pretty badass.

"My hair?" Arthur finally growls, and Eliot smirks and does the Revlon hair toss, using the motion to conduct a quick visual survey of the hotel room his baby brother is guarding.

A slip of a girl is standing there, pale-faced and with dark hair - longer than Cass. He blinks, and tenses his muscles in anticipation of the fight.

She can't be older than Tim. It's not, as he well knows, any kind of testament to her skill-levels; when Bruce was younger than Tim is now, he was already one of the most dangerous fighters on Earth. Without even going into the likes of Cass or Damian.

Or she could be meta. In which case, of course, all bets are off. Bruce feels his lips set into a thin line. All considered, that is still preferable to magic.

But she doesn't attack him, simply looks at him, solemn and unafraid. Something deep in Bruce's chest shifts.
Batman finds himself in the future with only River Tam for company. Awesome. Excellent at showing how good Bruce can be with damaged kids. And River is, of course, amazing.

Really lovely look at Mal and Zoe's relationship as he watches her marry Wash. He took her hand as the sky cleared, took it and spun her as Wash looked on, raised a glass. Zoe smiled with great tolerance, and right then, right there, he couldn't help thinking that maybe things were on the right compass. They were a small family on a small ship, about to fall into that longest and most difficult war there was in these parts: survival. They might just do okay.

At the Last Reaches by [livejournal.com profile] fourteenlines
Achy and beautiful Inara/Nandi that fills in their backstory believably.

Plum Blossom Song by [archiveofourown.org profile] Unovis
In a small scarlet book, in neatly inked numbers, Inara tracked her year according to Sihnon. Today in the city of her birth and training was the feast of the Winter Solstice, the shortest day and the longest night of the year. In their celebrations and prayers, people looked to the waning of the Yin and the waxing power of the Yang. Sacrifices were offered to ancestors and red dumplings were eaten in broth. For Companions the day had another, bittersweet taste: it was a day to contemplate the turning of the wheel. It was the day novitiates were accepted to the Academy and girls who had passed the initial training received their first-level names. It was the day a deceased Companion's name was embroidered on her House's banner and retired. Lovely story of Inara remembering Nandi and mourning her.

Harry Potter

The Way Back To Daylight by [livejournal.com profile] trailingoff
Remus travels to the underworld to bring Sirius back. Really nicely done, full of mythological references. "Are you sure this is the quickest way?"

"Why wouldn't it be?" she asked, sharp and brisk, without sparing him a glance.

"Sirius...my friend, he fell through a veiled archway in the Department of Mysteries. I assume it leads directly to the Underworld."

"No one can pass through the veil and remain alive; not even with the bough," said Sybill. "There are seven entrances to the Underworld, scattered around higgledy-piggledy, and the veil isn't one of them. It's just a short-cut, or an open window; a passage straight to the final judgement."

Remus followed her across the grass, his eyes on the Tor, but all he could see was Sirius falling backwards through the archway; that split-second, that knowledge of loss.

She smiles, and says, "I could help you. You can't cook, you know."

"There ain't nothing wrong with my cooking," he says. But he scratches the back of his neck and looks away. "And 'sides, it don't seem like the best idea to be letting you loose with all the boiling water and the knives and such."

She sighs and reaches across the table to pull the carrots and the knife toward her. The knife feels right in her hand, another kind of dancing when she lets herself feel the rhythm of it. He is something more than human, now. All of his impurities, his human failings have been washed away, purged in the heat of the divine wrath that filled him. A burning fire, the ultimate test of his soul, and it didn’t leave room for anything else.

He is the hand of God. He is here to purify the masses, the same way he was purified himself. He will take their sins and weaknesses in unto himself and leave them nothing but the righteous, cleansing fury that fills him even now. His cup overfloweth.

It is better this way. He is better, now. Gone are the petty human failings that had once defined him; gone are the trifling and troublesome worries that plagued him. He is more now, he is stronger. He is drunk on the glory of his own existence.

Sirius offered. / "Yes," James said, throwing up his hands. "Exactly!" / Remus coughed like he was trying not to laugh. "You probably shouldn't wear the pirate costume." Absolutely hilarious and adorable James/Lily. ♥♥♥♥♥

Iron Man

for today or the rest of my life by [livejournal.com profile] calicokat
There's no Iron Man without Tony Stark, and no Tony Stark without Pepper Potts, and there's no normal for Pepper Potts – nor can she quite remember, now, why she ever wanted there to be. This takes a typical fic premise - Pepper gets a boyfriend and Tony gets jealous - and plays it out in a mature, logical way with some lovely writing and a satisfying, believable conclusion.

Leave of Absence by [livejournal.com profile] zoewarren
She was wading through paperwork and discharge formalities when Simon's surgeon approached, bowed over her hand, asked if he might be permitted to book some of her time. He was polite, respectable, well groomed. Alliance. The revulsion she felt, the rage, was overwhelming. She put a pretty smile on her rejection, a well-trained silver tongue. He left feeling he'd been paid a better compliment than if she'd accepted. She swallowed bile as he walked away. Inara, making her choices, in the aftermath of Miranda. Lovely.

Friday Night Lights

Three Movements by [livejournal.com profile] innie_darling
Brief, lovely look at Julie Taylor and three moments she was awesome.

Now We Are Sixteen by [livejournal.com profile] athousandwinds
In the afternoons, Lucy usually took care of what Peter called "handwriting practice" and she called bumf. Susan didn't like that. It was not an activity she enjoyed, but between Peter galloping off to parts unknown and Su being gracious and Ed sitting in court, they all said they didn't have the time to do any paperwork. Hmph. Lucy plonked herself down at her desk and attacked her list of Things to Do. A day in the life of the Pevensies, kings and queens of Narnias. Lovely.

Strangers by [livejournal.com profile] zerodetorres
"I know we were close," he says without looking up. "We loved each other very much, didn't we?" / "Booth." / "I know this because everybody else is ready to let go and start over, but you're not." He lifts his head, apologetic. "I'm sorry I don't remember the things you find worth holding on to," he says quietly. Sniffly good Booth/Brennan in the wake of the season finale.

Burn Notice

Brain Drain by [livejournal.com profile] florahart
Michael v. zombies, with a cool OC, timely help from Fi and Sam, and note-perfect voiceovers.

Love you good and strong (while our love is good and young) by [livejournal.com profile] wintercreek
Really lovely bit of Kaylee/Inara.

Canary in a Coal Mine by [livejournal.com profile] 2ndary_author
Poignant, sharply observed story of Simon realizing that his old life is gone, that he's not the same man he was on Osiris; it has a palpable weight to it, like the boxes Simon rifles through. "Sometimes, wild birds will attack the more exotic ones," Simon had explained, just as his father had explained it to him when he'd started keeping them as pets. As a child, Simon had figured that heaven must be pretty much like the east balcony, where Father kept gloriously plumed pets in giant rosewood cages amid small fountains and greenery. As an adult…well, it was still a pretty thought. "Their bright colors attract predators to food sources and—" "They're different," River interrupted, her voice low but fierce enough to silence the others. "They're brighter. And stranger. They've been places, and they remember things. The other birds, the dull ones—they're jealous."

The Edges of Things by Jane St Clair
River and Simon have a vivid fantasy life. Sharp, sad, believable take on how Simon and River might rationalize what they do.

Full Circle, or, Two and a Half Loves for River Tam by [livejournal.com profile] carmarthen
"Love is a chemical reaction in the brain," she says, instead, miserably. "An involuntary interaction of pheromones and neurotransmitters." / Inara laughs her gentle Companion laugh and offers River a tea biscuit. "That's not very comforting when you're in love, is it?" Gorgeous, achy look at River learning about love.

Gather Me a Home by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve
He learns to make do with what he's given, mostly; bunking down on old straw mattresses, helping to teach some of the kids from the Core how to fight, choking down food that's just this side of palatable. But Mal keeps a hold of some things from before, refusing to carry one of the regulation firearms everyone was given in their first week's training. Lovely look at Mal, during and after the war.

a theory of relativity by [livejournal.com profile] paperflowered
Lovely look at River's relationships with various members of Serenity's crew.

Touched, or Eight Fragments by [livejournal.com profile] lunabee34
Sometimes, when Serenity stops on a moon closer to the Core, Inara buys a burlap sack full of onions, a thick slab of strong cheese, and loaves of stale bread. Then she and Shepherd Book slice the onions so thinly she can read the maker's mark on her knife through their concentric rings. / Inara's eyes water, and she wipes them on the sleeve of her kimono, or else the finely woven handkerchief the Shepherd tucks beneath her bracelet with gentle fingers. His eyes water as well; they both look as if they are grieving a loss, but the galley is loud with their laughter and the metallic noises of their knives working. / Inara coats the skillet with rendered fat, and the onions' acrid bite turns rich and sweet in the recycled air. Beautifully clear, sharp look at Inara and her relationships with Serenity's other inhabitants.

People Who Repair Quantums, or Five Planets The Enterprise Never Visited by [livejournal.com profile] ignipes
"So you're a drug-addicted messianic cult dedicated to drinking your own distilled urine so your descendants generations down the road can grow palm trees. How's that working out for you?" Awesome set of mini crossovers. Gets the voices just right.

Symmetry in Orbit by [livejournal.com profile] betweenthebliss
Pavel has been waiting all his life for a friend like this. Between classes they debate derivative theoretics outside in the Academy's regal shadow, Pavel stretched out beneath a tree, River pacing barefoot with blades of grass tickling her ankles. The table in the alcove facing the ocean on the fourth floor of the library becomes theirs; they study until late at night beside the open window, listening to the sounds of the sea. On the weekends they take the BART to the beach, sharing a pair of headphones to tune in to the Vulcan Science Academy's weekly podcast, and Pavel walks in the surf with his pant legs rolled up, while ahead of him River dances joyfully with the waves. Chekov and River being BABY GENIUSES together at the Academy. *hearts*

Fair in Love and War by [livejournal.com profile] 2ndary_author
"But I’m not the type to marry a man can’t find his way back to me. So you’d best stop sulking and decide if that’s like to be a problem." / "I would’ve, you know. I always will," Wash says, finally. / "Would’ve what?" / “Found my way back. " Wah! Wash! *sniffle* This is a lovely look at Wash and Zoe just post-War Stories.

Narnia/Lord of the Rings

Ere Yet We Loose the Legions by [livejournal.com profile] bedlamsbard
Highly enjoyable and workable LotR/Narnia crossover. The Uruk-hai pursue Eomer's eored into Narnia. High King Peter is not pleased.

Time When . . . by [livejournal.com profile] tassosss
Wonderfully warm and hopeful story of how Zoe gets knocked up (by Dean Winchester!), and how that changes everything. There's some minor Zoe/Dean (obviously), but it's not about that at all. More of a Firefly story than a Supernatural one, could be read without knowing SPN canon, really. Lovely. (Could use another beta pass.)

Love Bipolar by [livejournal.com profile] nilchance
Young Parker meets the Winchesters. I really enjoyed this.

The Zuul Job by [livejournal.com profile] harriet_spy
Adorable snip of a Leverage/SPN crossover - Bela and Parker are after the same artifact. It goes about as well as you'd expect.

Supernatural/The Graveyard Book

They are not all saints by [livejournal.com profile] ultraviolet9a
Fantastic crossover with Ihe Graveyard Book, gets Silas's voice just right.

Supernatural/The Time Traveler's Wife

Barefoot Girl by [livejournal.com profile] kalquessa
Lovely, delicate, moving crossover with The Time Traveler's Wife, which I haven't read, but this worked for me anyway. Dean and Alba's many meetings.

And all I ask (is a tall ship and a star to steer her by) by [livejournal.com profile] merle_p
Lovely look at the friendship between Wash and Kaylee, full of the quiet strength both bring to the crew, and which the others probably don't even notice until it's gone. Wah! Wash! *sniffle*

Homicide: Life on the Street

Five Finger Discount by Laura Smith
Awesome Frankentim ficlet written for *me* that sounds JUST LIKE THEM circa season 4. *heart*

Chronicles of Narnia

and sometimes you hear the silence speak. by [livejournal.com profile] lassiterfics
"Do you ever change an ending to please the audience?" Edmund asks. "Of course," Shativa answers. Her long hair tumbles down her back as she sifts through her clothes for a dress to wear. "A pleased audience pays better. Mama Biguda doesn't like to, but I convince her." "How do you do that?" "I remind her endings are illusions anyway. In a story, there are a thousand endings and a thousand beginnings between the first word spoken and the last word said." Beautiful look at Edmund and Susan, at magic and love and storytelling.

Battlestar Galactica/Star Wars

For Our Own Benefit by [livejournal.com profile] smercy
"It's talking to me," the boy squeaked, "Racetrack, the alien is talking to me in Basic and I can understand it." / "Quit your joking, Apollo," the girl scoffed. Very cool, subtle, sad BSG/SW crossover. The Colonial fleet encounters Yoda.

Take My Robot by [livejournal.com profile] mandysbitch
Bender ends up on Serenity. He spends some time with Jayne. Hilarity ensues! *glee*

Supernatural/Buffy the Vampire Slayer

No Power on This Earth by [livejournal.com profile] redrikki
Xander and Dean bond while working at the Fabulous Ladies' Night Club. Short, funny, and a little sad. I can totally see Xander and Dean being BFF. *hearts* They could talk about regular guy stuff like girls and cars and grilling things and any monsters that came up were just metaphors and double entendres. It had been a long time since he'd had that. It was kind of, well, weird actually, but nice weird like bubble bath instead of bad weird like snot monsters.

Sam, Son of Adam by [livejournal.com profile] maychorian
"Your brother is lost beyond the usual ways of going, son of Adam. [...] I can see and hear this in your face and voice. Where has he gone? What fell magic took him from you?" In his quest to rescue Dean, Sam finds himself in Narnia. Lovely. And the sequel, Kings for a Little Time, in which Dean and Sam prepare to become Kings of Narnia.

Supernatural/X-Men Movieverse

Migratory Birds by [livejournal.com profile] nekare
"Fuck that race shit, we're all human beings, Sam," Dean says, angry himself. "I'm not about to lower myself to their level, that's all." AU mashup with XMM, where Sam and Dean have mutant powers. Sam joins the Brotherhood and Dean ends up at Xavier's, and then the world ends. Could use a good line beta, but good use of the AU and the characters.
