Aladdin

Whole New World by Roga
Funny, sweet, and poignant story of the genie after the movie's over. Lovely.

Fairy Tales

Fire, Measured by What Doesn't Burn by [livejournal.com profile] tangleofthorns
Absolutely stunning and heartwrenching modern recasting of the twelve dancing princesses. Breathtakingly beautiful and moving. Totally lives up to the hype. The wind was knocked out of you, suckerpunched away with the awareness that you never could tell safe from suicide bomber. Your mouth hung open and empty. She walked right past you without a second glance, her stilettos pointed in her hand like switchblades. Her bare feet were tiny; her head barely came to your shoulder. It felt like it took her all night to go, and by the time you could breathe, she was gone.

Fables

Shards by zeldadestry
Cinderella's in love with Bigby, but she'll be okay. Sharp and smart, feels really true to canon.

Mythology

Small Step For Man by [livejournal.com profile] toft_froggy
Artemis and Apollo, through the ages. Creepy yet beautiful meditation on what it means to live forever. I really like how the gods are all both human and distantly other at the same time.

this is not a chick flick by [livejournal.com profile] bookesque
As so often happens, the reality of the lives of Hades and Persephone cannot possibly compare to the epic saga that our imaginations have concocted. This is not a romantic story. But it is a story of love, nonetheless. Hee! This is an awesome, funny, touching retelling of the Persephone myth, full of banter and hilarity.

The Iliad

Little Victories by [livejournal.com profile] penknife
"All I ask is to go home," he said. "I'd like to lie in my own bed with my wife beside me, and bore my son sick with tales of our great deeds." "You don't ask for glory?" she asked, her eyes sparkling. "If I can't manage that without your help, I probably don't deserve it," he said. Athena and Odysseus have a conversation during the funeral games for Patroclus. Vivid and lovely, with spot-on characterization and sharp dialogue.

The Epic of Gilgamesh

To the Westward Shores by fresne
"Be of good heart, Gilgamesh. He is mighty, but we are two." Stunningly gorgeous, evocative, poetic retelling of the battle of Humbaba.

Fables

Other Jungles by Grey Bard
Very cool story of how Mowgli came to be in the employ of the mayor of Fabletown. Beautifully written, true to both Kipling and the comics.

Greek Mythology

Spider's Web by athousandwinds
Clever and perfect story of Odysseus courting Penelope.

Ionic, Doric, Corinthian, Agony by psychomachia
Wry, sharp, and poignant look at Ares and Aphrodite throughout the ages. Fantastic.

Hercules: the Legendary Journeys

I Friend You, You Friend Him by Roga
Salmoneus invents the social network. Hijinks and hilarity ensue.

Ex Machina
Overheard in New York by Sarah T.
Okay, so I don't even *read* this comic, but I know enough to have read this story, and this story is good. Wonderfully evocative of New York, even down to the machines that inhabit it. Um, spoilers for the latest issue to be safe, so be wary if you're not caught up.

Fables
Bigby's Sense of Snow by Kevbot
Lovely look at Bigby, his hopes and fears, while he and Snow are in Paris.

Fray
Stories Darkness Tells You by Thuvia Ptarth
Shivery good story of Melaka and Harth and the darkness that binds them.

Sandman
Take Your Carriage Clock and Shove It by Amberite
A brilliant take on Thessaly. I'm a god of me.

Fables
Bright Iron, Bitter Ashes by hossgal
I'm not sure how well this actually fits with Fables canon, but as a reimagining of Cinderella, it's brilliant - sharp, dark, smart, and true. Well worth reading.

Once Upon a Time by Seanan
Lovely vignette in which Bigby Wolf thinks about what it means to be a wolf, and to be a man. What does it say about my childhood, that I come from a time and a place where even the wind could fall in love, and mean it?

Except for one (Travel Documents), all of these previously appeared in my LJ.

The Simpsons
The Ballad of Lenny and Carl by Kyra Cullinan
It's Lenny/Carl and it's sweet and poignant and funny and the character voices are dead on.

Peanuts
Every Good Girl Does Fine by [livejournal.com profile] kissmeagain
Perfectly Peppermint Patty. And Marcie, too.

Lucifer
Come What May by Catrinella
Excellent look at how Mazikeen can never really escape the tension between love and duty, her loyalty to Lucifer v. her loyalty to the Lilim, even when she's meant to be having a tender interlude with Lucifer rather than a conference of war.

Winnie the Pooh
In Which A New Child Comes To The Forest by [livejournal.com profile] loligo
Lovely - Christopher Robin is grown and brings his son to the Hundred Acre Wood.

Fables
Rewrites and Revisions by Sophia Prester
I love how this, much like the source text itself, plays with the narrative conventions of fairytales and stories, and I really like this characterization of Snow.

Calvin & Hobbes
Transmogrification by [livejournal.com profile] hyperfocused
While I'm not sold on the epilogue, the rest of this fic is pure brilliance - Calvin (and Hobbes) as he grows up, bored and attitudinal, and then brilliant and freaky. Very cool
