The Absence of Truth in Cartography by
angelgazing
Lush, hot, sharp, sweet, funny, sad and utterly in character. This is a long, slowly unfolding story of an unplanned road trip Danny and Rusty take through the southwestern US. It’s beautiful and it hurts and you’ll like the pain.
"I'm beginning to understand lesbians better," Danny says, looking like he's trying not to laugh, and rubbing at the side of his mouth. Rusty's going to buy him a shaving kit next stop, he decides. "You sleep with a guy and then he loses all respect for you."
"Danny," Rusty whispers just loudly enough to be heard over the traffic on the street. Danny's all of two feet away and there's no one else here. "That would imply that I ever had any respect for you to begin with."

Danny and Rusty. A road trip. A bar fight. Banter and sex. What more could you ask for?
They make their way through the tollbooths, growing sillier as they go. First Danny feeds Rusty the tolls, and Rusty drops the quarters in the metal trays gently, but eventually Danny’s throwing quarters from the passenger seat, one at a time, and Rusty’s keeping track of how many Danny misses. By Pittsburgh, Danny owes Rusty $2.25 and it’s practically dawn, so they check into a Super 8 to crash.
Between Vision and Substance by
luzdeestrellas
Danny attempts to build a house of cards, both literal and metaphorical. Wistful and funny, with good banter and sizzling UST.
Every evening he tried again, and while he tried and failed to build the cards with his hands, he effortlessly carved the paths of their lives with his words. Rusty more than once thought that maybe his card endeavour would go a little better if he could keep his mouth shut for more than thirty seconds, but he never said so, just in case Danny agreed with him. He lay on his back, fingers trailing in the grass beside him, mouth still sticky from the Charleston Chews he was always eating back then, and which Danny swore made him feel sick just to look at, and listened to Danny talk of the things they would do and the places they would go. How the world would be theirs, because they would be better, smarter, quicker than everyone else, because he was Rusty and Danny was Danny, and together they were Rusty and Danny. Rusty listened and believed him, but sometimes he thought the world could wait. He was ten years old, and it was enough to lie where he was, with the sound of Danny’s voice lulling him into impossible dreams.

Cherry Ice is one of the few writers who can make me kinda like Tess, and she does it again in this story, in which Tess visits Rusty in LA while Danny is on a business trip. Sharp, brittle, like a windshield webbed with cracks.
"Tess," Rusty says, not unkindly. The sky overhead is blue, blue, blue and the hum of traffic floats up to them. "Tess, you lie all the time."
"Right," she says, and stands. "You know, that would have had a lot more impact if it were coming from someone who wasn't sleeping with my husband."
He smiles, long and slow with teeth showing. "That is, in fact, adultery, and not related in any way to my tendency to bear or not to bear false witness against my neighbours. At the end of the day, I know exactly which lines I've crossed."
Checking Up by
trakkie
Linus is tired of the others checking up on him. He goes to stay at Rusty’s hotel. I’m not a big fan of Rusty/Linus, but this story totally sells me on it.
Linus gets to the lobby at seven fifteen and watches Rusty work. Even though he’s gone straight, he’s still conning; he manages to convince every guest that they’re his most important customer, and everyone who approaches him with a complaint leaves thinking they’ve gotten exactly what they wanted. Linus wonders if Rusty even realizes he’s doing it, or if it just comes naturally to him.
Cookies and Ink by

So perfectly in character and incredibly hot:
Danny smiled. "Did I ever thank you for the cookies?"
"I baked them myself," Rusty said. He loosened his tie and turned on the lights. The lamps made his shirt shimmer and change colors.
"I know," Danny told him. "I tried eating one."
Rusty smiled widely. "You poor bastard."
Every Day I Love You Less by
deepsix
This was written for me and I love it. Isabel’s left Rusty and he’s miserable, though that may not be why. Sharp, witty banter, incisive characterization and a subtle handling of the emotions between Danny and Rusty, coming together again after all the little betrayals. And hot. Did I mention the hot?
Rusty hadn't been so much a dishevelled wreck when Danny arrived, but he definitely had that lived-in look, and the bathrobe wasn't working much in his favour.
"I see you've taken the endless criticism to heart," Danny had said, "and have given up on dressing yourself completely."
From Mathematics Further Off by
amatia
After Danny offers Linus the job in O11, he crashes on his couch for the night. Amatia NAILS Linus and Danny’s characterization here. This feels like it could totally slot into canon.
"You married?"
Danny looks down at the ring. "I was."
"Then why are you still wearing it?"
"That's a question you should save for when we're better acquainted," Danny replies, as if he didn't see Linus almost naked twenty minutes ago.
Lollipop by
jmtorres
Danny and Rusty talk themselves out of a spot of trouble. Well, Danny does. Rusty just looks pretty.
"A talent," said Rusty, in lecture mode, holding his lollipop like a microphone, "is a natural aptitude. A skill is something one learns and develops."
Smartass. "I was a born liar," Danny declared, "but I have honed the ability to perfection."
One More Cup of Coffee by
shrift
Danny and Rusty on surveillance. Banter! Snackfoods! Thievery!
"So, diamonds," Rusty said. He tilted his head. "Which anniversary?"
"Thirtieth," Danny said.
Rusty blinked. "That's a long time to wait for diamonds."
"You won't have to wait thirty years for yours," Danny said.
Three to Six by
storydivagirl
Rusty and Tess wait for Danny after O11, and Tess drives Rusty crazy. Not in the fun way. This story is a great look at their dynamic - uncomfortable, Danny the only thing they have in common, and it’s not enough to make them friends, but it can smooth the surface for a little while. And it’s pretty damn funny.
“That’s an interesting suit, Rusty,” Tess commented over pancakes.
He lifted the collar and said, “I was walking along the street and it called to me. I’ve finally done what you hoped, Tess. I found something to spend the rest of my life with.”
Wake-up Call by
marzilla
Danny has a bit of a crisis of confidence before his wake up call in Ocean’s 12. Rusty convinces him he doesn’t look fifty below the waist. Funny, hot and unexpectedly sweet, because it’s nice to see a less sure side of Danny for a little while.
He followed, and stood in the middle of Rusty’s room, bouncing on his toes as Rusty yawned and stretched. “I gotta calm down.”
Rusty’s eyes glanced sideways at him with amusement. “And what are the odds on that?”
The sense of urgency hadn’t decreased. His mind was still spinning back and forth along all the tracks connected to this job. “Do you think I look fifty?”
Rusty stared, then ran a hand over his head and grimaced. “Are you really going to do this now?”
You’re Killing Me Here by
mousapelli
Saul harasses Rusty to get back together with Danny. All beta bias aside, this is just a really fun, funny story. It slots right into canon and the Saul voice is amazingly perfect.
"Rusty," he started, having apparently thought long enough about how Tess's height was relevant to the situation. He pointed at the chair next to his.
"I don't have time to talk about it, Saul," Rusty warned, giving a pointed look across the room at Linus, who was having an emergency suit adjusting between Reuben and Danny.
"That's your problem, you don't have time," Saul shook his head. "You never stop and think about what you're doing…"
"Not now, Saul."
"Sit down, Robert."
Rusty sat.
