Anatomy of a Countdown by
caelumi
He didn't think that dead men cast shadows, but his Dad's is long and Dean feels cold. Sharp, painful AU of Crossroad Blues. Dean makes a different decision. Sharp and achy.
Carry Me Over the Sky by
killabeez
Sam and Dean fight, get drunk, and get out of hand. Heartbreaking, achy, beautiful, and with the light of hope at the end. (Wincest)
church bells all were broken by
wheebubbles
Lovely bit of Sam/Jess. Ignore the annoying lack of quotes in the dialogue.
Cirque de Celine by
big_pink
Sam has a vision which leads the boys to the Cirque de Soleil and Celine Dion, demons and bison and danger. Tight, suspenseful, angsty and hilarious in turn. A great read.
Don't Look Back by Dee
Lovely, smart, interesting story about Seri, the girl from "Home", ten years later. by the time she got to high school, and definitely by the time she got to eleventh grade, she wasn't actually sure she believed in it any more. Ghosts, demons, things in her closet. It seemed... well, it seemed a bit fucking far-fetched, to tell the truth.
The Dumbest Thing Dean Ever Did by
hiyacynth
Early and repeated lectures on the mandatory use of condoms was John's strategy when it became clear that getting Dean to keep it in his pants was futile, and that the only realistic goal was to keep him from impregnating the nation's entire female population or picking up an STD or twenty. Hilarious. Sam is awesome here, as well.
Evil As You Say by
laytoncolt
He always always knows the exact right thing to say, but Dean's a hell of a lot stronger than he thinks. Sam's not the first to underestimate him. John did it all of the time. Creepy, believable, with a kicker of an ending.
For the Good Times by
coiledsoul
Sam observes the day of the dead. Sharp and evocative.
he don't show much these days by
coffee_in_bed
Hot, hard, sad look at John Winchester. A little more promiscuous than I imagine him, but worth reading.
Held by
eloise_bright
Dean puts his arm round the back of his baby brother's neck, just like Mommy says, and puts his other arm over his chest, and Sammy goes still and looks up at Dean, like he knows who Dean is. Like he knows Dean is his big brother. Sigh. Adorable.

Things Dean Winchester keeps in the glove compartment of the Impala. Lovely. I really like stories that catalogue their random stuff, and this one does it well. Subtle and evocative.
Inventory by
hiyacynth
Dad always taught them that as contradictory as it sounds, good improvisation is all about preparation. So when all the heavy lifting's done, they stock their pockets. Quiet and lovely look at Dean, and the things he carries.
Keeping Things Whole by jdyt
Excellent look at John Winchester through the first season, and over the past 22 years. Sharp and smart. Don't let the FF.net address put you off. Totally worth the trip.
The Measure of a Man by
ignipes
Adorable story of Sam's no good very bad sixteenth birthday.
money's worth by whereupon
The dead are too many, the sacrifices too high. He can't do this. He will lose Sam, he loses everyone, he will fail and Dad will still be dead. Dean and Sam, hollow from grief and barely hanging on. Heartbreaking. (wincest)
Not The World I Left Behind by
kellifer_fic
Between blinks, Dean Winchester loses five years. Tight, suspenseful apocafic with excellent Dean characterization. I wish it were longer. I want more of this world.
Old Rebel Yeller by
big_pink
Sam and Dean help out some Civil War reenactors who have a ghost problem. Of course, it's not as easy as it sounds. Long, enjoyable, and I really like some of the character grace notes here.
Our Beginnings Never Know Our Ends by
faye_dartmouth
Exquisitely heartbreaking. Sam deals with the ghost of the past, and Dean deals with Sam falling apart.
Pinion by
greensilver
AU of Devil's Trap. In the aftermath, Dean is broken and slowly attempts to put himself back together. Sharp and painful and beautiful like broken glass.
Protest Song by
lanthano
Fabulous look at John and his boys. Heartbreaking. "he wants to tell Sam that none of it matters, that it makes no difference who's in office when the only thing standing between life and darkness is a man and whatever weapons he can bring to the battle."
Punxsutawney Sucks by
big_pink
There's trouble in Punxsutawney after Groundhog's day, and Dean and Sam investigate. Funny, action-packed, with an intriguing mystery, vivid original characters, and great Sam-n-Dean interaction.
Red by
big_pink
Long, twisty, layered story of Dean and Sam up against a predator Dean's met before. Brilliant, gripping read. highly recommended.
Signs and Symptoms by
emma_daisy
Like all things, it becomes routine. Sam's tired, jaw cracking with a yawn that makes Dean laugh and dart a sidelong look at him, eyes still mostly on the road but all his attention on Sam. Sam's visions are becoming more frequent and harder to deal with. Sharp, achy.
The Sound of Your Voice Speaking My Name by hossgal
Dean's curses won't work on Sammy, either, he has no way to un-jinx them, to make their words comprehensible to each other. No matter what he drinks, there is nothing in his throat to form a language they will understand. Dean, in the silences. Achy and beautiful.
Stumbling Towards the Light by
destina
Wistful and achy look at Sam and Dean on Thanksgiving. Not like they had ever been normal, but they had been a family, and their version had worked for them, most of the time.
Talismans by
killabeez
The story of Dean's bracelets. Lovely.
Tchaikovsky's Another One Bites The Dust by
uschickens
Oh. My. God. One of the funniest things I have ever read IN MY LIFE. John and the Demon, in hell. *dies laughing*
'Til I Feel All Your Pieces by
technosage
Breathtaking - sharp and painful and true. Sam celebrates the Day of the Dead by setting up an altar for Dean. (Wincest)
untitled (a stanford fic) by
moveablehistory
Clever, interesting, and enjoyable story about Sam and Dean after the demon is gone, finding a middle ground between normal and hunting, and living there happily.
The Vanishing Glow by
sanyin
He remembers places by the folds in the paper, the arbitrary little marks he made while trying to figure out a case, a dirty fingerprint, smear of old blood, letters worn where he used to lean an elbow, a weapon, signs of age to point the way, to leave a mark. I have a huge love of maps and this story hits that kink perfectly. Dean, the road, and the maps that guide him.
Vertigo from Falling by
fryadvocate
"Angels don't have prettier ones, kid." Dean has wings. Don't judge me! This is beautifully written - in character, lyrical, evocative, and moving. Even if there are, you know, wings.
When By Now and Tree By Leaf by
pyrebi
Warm, insightful look at Jess, and Sam through her eyes. Good use of 2nd person. You love how, when you're scared for any reason, he wraps his body around yours and mumbles things in Latin; you don't get it, but it makes you feel better.
Winter's Chill by
iamstealthyone
Dean thinks there's something hinky about the Mall of America Santa. Wonderful casefile with some fun brotherly banter and bonding.
Your Bridge in This Storm by
dontyouwaitup
Post-Crossroad Blues. Hard, heartbreaking and true. Sam wants to be sure Dean didn't make the deal. (wincest)
