Hermione trying out for Bake Off is Harry's idea, and once they've worked through all the details of her appearing on muggle TV, she agrees it's a good one. It could be fun, maybe even low stakes enough that she won't get too competitive.

The real question is whose idea was it for Draco Malfoy to try out? This is a really sweet story of Hermione giving Draco a chance after she learns he's grown up and turned over a new leaf. And also they are both on GBBO, though it's a lot less about baking than you'd think.

At the top of the steps, a hand reached out to him. He let it tug him down the porch and push him against one of the stone columns. And Ronan cupped Adam's face in his gentle hands.

"It's okay, Parrish. You got it? It's okay."

He inhaled, let it out on a shuddering breath. Ronan moved in and laid his head on Adam's shoulder, hands sliding down his body to embrace him.

Adam chuckled weakly, still sick with emotion. "How are you the well-adjusted one?"

"You take that back, asshole."

He wrapped his arms around Ronan and pulled him in tight, pulled them together until the tension inside him began to ease, letting the void fill with Ronan's stubborn and relentless caring. He became aware that his head was throbbing.

Ronan waited for him, not moving until Adam released him. Adam and Ronan and figuring things out along the way.

"I’ll teach you how to pick locks," he said, and then pointed at the records he’d been reading. "We keep records for Haskell," he said. "But if you learn of anyone cheating, or snitching, you come straight to me. Not Per Haskell," he added, almost as an afterthought. "I’ll handle it directly."

She swallowed past the nervous lump in her throat and nodded, taking in the room itself, evaluating it. It was an office, albeit it of the Barrel variety. His private quarters were separated off, and the door was closed. It was almost cozy.

(Almost.)

"So you want my report?" she asked and he nodded at her, tracking the distinctive bulge in her jacket sleeve. "And after that," he said, "we’re going to get you a real knife." Snapshots from Inej's early days with the Dregs.

When Inej woke later, startled awake by the scrape of rope against her wrists, she looked across to find his hands gripping hers in his sleep. The sight of their fingers tangled together made her want to weep, or scream, or laugh. Here were two of the deadliest people in the Barrel, holding onto each other in the middle of the night like children afraid of monsters under their bed.

Those children had died a long time ago. They had become monsters themselves and raged wars because of it. But Inej had learned from her years on the Wraith that even the sea, great and furious and wild as it was, grew calm. It ebbed and flowed under the call of the moon. It lulled into soft pushes and pulls.

Was this how you learned to love being a monster? by holding another monster between your hands like they are walls, like you might fall apart if you let go? Inej returns to Ketterdam, harder and darker after three years at sea, but she and Kaz find their way back to each other anyway.

You climb up, but if you fall, the Barrel will be waiting. The Barrel was there to break you. She had been bound to the ground for three weeks following, nursing a limp that looked like a mummer’s mockery of Kaz’s. She did stretches in her small room, all but climbed the walls. It wasn’t fear that she had felt, being trapped in the Slat, the Barrel, the Dregs (with Kaz), but a restlessness. A hum that settled in her bones, electric and pulsing, that made her fingers and her toes twitch.

This is what she learned, trapped: never let a thing break you here. Never let a thing hold you down and keep you. Inej returns to Ketterdam. Sharp and melancholy.
