Soldier considers the likelihood of a psychotic break, first for Captain and then for himself. Unfortunately there is probably no applicable psychological testing scale for either of them, Soldier due to his optimizations and Captain due to being a fucking alien from goddamn Mars. Whatever inscrutable ritual he's executing is probably immune to any kind of intervention. An AU that mashes up Bucky's comics backstory with CATWS for GREAT HILARITY.

"Just waiting for the next one," he says. It's maybe too honest for strangers, but all Steve has these days are strangers.

Dick's silent for a second and then he breathes out, takes a long drink of his beer. "I know a guy like that. Can't say I've ever seen him happy."

Steve's struck, for a second, by how alien that thought is to him. "Not sure being happy has much to do with it." Oh Steve. This is really lovely - Steve's a mess, just out of the ice, and Dick is, as always, the best person the universe. <333

This does a really great job of translating "Landing at Point Rain" into a Buffy-style monster of the week story. I could have read a few thousand more words of this fusion, but it ends rather abruptly.

Instead he turns his face into Bucky's shoulder to hide the sting of sudden tears, and Bucky brings his metal hand up to cup Steve's head, thumb stroking briefly across the line of his jaw. The shaky breath Bucky lets out says Steve's not the only one abruptly affected.

Steve's heart beats faster, too much gratitude and love to fill its four chambers. Bucky's heart is as steady as ever, the metronome by which Steve has measured his life, and Steve tries to match it again. Exquisitely lovely recovery for Bucky (and Steve too), with lots and lots of delicious pining. (Peggy is mentioned but oddly absent otherwise.)
